Doctor Who has always held a special place in the hearts of viewers. It's one of those great shows that doesn't take itself too seriously, instead just going all out to entertain and have a bit of fun. But, that said, the Christmas specials haven't always delivered. Would 2008's teasingly titled The Next Doctor be another flop, or could the Doctor deliver?

After spending several Christmases in the present, the Doctor takes a trip to Victorian London. But, as usual, trouble has followed him there, and it's not long before he hears someone calling his name - but not calling for him. As it turns out, another man referring to himself as "The Doctor" is in London, and so are some of his oldest enemies, the Cybermen. What follows is the usual Doctor Who episode; some aliens have a plan to conquer Earth, the Doctor pulls a selection of facial expressions and reels off his usual quips, before saving Christmas and getting a round of applause.

While it's the typical Doctor Who format, the humour, slapstick, and fun were a little lacking. The episode chugged along a little too slowly, and spent a little too much time figuring out the identity of the Victorian Doctor - who, unsurprisingly, is not going to be the next Doctor - and skimmed over the Cybermen and their weird new Cyber-dog-things as if they were only kept around so that they'd have an excuse for a brief CGI sequence at the end of the episode.

The inclusion of the kids seemed incredibly forced, and it didn't help that all the child actors chosen didn't seem to have any idea what they were supposed to be doing, unless the basic direction for kid actors in a scene full of Cybermen is "look very confused". If they'd managed to get a selection of child actors who could pull a facial expression that wouldn't be portrayed on the internet with a colon and a capital "O", it could have worked, but the end result is poor, and feels very out of place. If at any point the episode managed to absorb you, this would knock you right back into reality.

Tennant's performance as the Doctor, too, feels lacklustre. It's plain to see why he's leaving the show, and it seems a lot of the enthusiasm and excitement that he had when he first became the Doctor has gone. The quips are still there, but they feel a little forced, and he doesn't even put as much effort into hamming it up any more. He's been a great Doctor, but it definitely shows that he's reaching the end of his tenure.

By the looks of this Christmas special it appears both writer Russell T Davies and tenth Doctor David Tennant won't be going out with a bang, unless the cheesy CGI explosions count. The episode just lacked in any flair or fun, and without those elements Doctor Who is barely passable as entertainment. It's another Christmas disappointment from the Doctor, and with Davies in charge of three of the specials next year, it looks like a bleak year for the Time Lord.

David Tennant will always be my Doctor. I was very sad when I heard of his pending departure.

So was I, I think he's been brilliant up til now, and whoever they choose as the next Doctor will have a big task living up to his standards.

I just think he knows he's going, and isn't that bothered. Hopefully I'm wrong, and it's just another bad Christmas episode, but I can't help but think that after the last episode.

Christopher Eccleston was my favourite Doctor. All the recent episodes with David Tennant have been quite lacklustre. I don't think they even made a real effort with the series final; The last half hour of it was just David Tennant going around and giving everyone who appeared in that season a hug. The high point of the final battle with the Daleks ($10 says they show up next season) amounted to Catherine Tate going "Look at me! I can make them spin!" before they all blew up. Severely disappointing.

Eh. My rant's done. Good review. Quick and to the point. Just be careful not to post it four times in future :)

Cheers mate, and I'll try to avoid the quadruple posting in the future!

Raise it to $50 and you've got a deal.

My problem with the Doctor Who series, is that nothing happens, and that's made everything very predictable now. I wonder if David Tennant knows this, and wants to get out of there before everything goes down the drain, including his career. No offense to him, he is a good actor. There are only two episodes I really love to death. Blink and..... the other one in which we didn't see the Doctor until the very end. Y'know the one with the guy and a fat green people eater. Don't remember the name. I like those more, partly because they were brilliant (especially Blink) but also I didn't have to see Doctor Who the entire time , who I know is going to win in the end. I would much rather watch "Encounters With Who" then just Doctor Who personally. Hell they wouldn't even need to keep everyone alive. They could yank our emotional hamstrings (as I like to call them) and then kill everyone off and the Doctor fails for once. That's my biggest problem; there's no drama ever, I always know who's going to win, and who's going to live and die. Even the slap stick kind of died off slowly. You'd think with bringing in Donna, who I know is a famous British comedian, they'd want to make the most of her talent, but they don't, and the only really funny episode with her in it is the first one. I don't mean the Christmas special by the way.

The Best, and only real Doctor Who:

Perhaps...
But I've got a soft spot for them all, just Tom was the "most" Doctor.

Which reminds me....

When the Doctor was showing off his regenerations, did anyone else notice it went 1,2,3,4,5,6...10. No Baker, Mccoy, Mcgann or Ecclestone?

The CGI bit at the end of the episode was retarded; really awesome, but still utterly retarded.

And they have overplayed the drama in recent series, as can be seen by the fact that "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..." has actually become a catch phrase for Tenant's Doctor.

They were definitely there because I immediately thought "ok, they've secured Mcgann's place in canon now"

Overall, I thought it turned out better then I expected but it still wasn't as good as some others. I didn't really enjoy myself until the 1/2 way point when David Morrissey showed he could bring some emotion into it all. After that point I started liking the character, but still thought the storyline was a bit rubbish.

Nope, coz RTD is out and Moffat (Blink, Empty Child, Silence in the Library) is in.

It will be glorious. Or there will be a level of hell raised that even Davros couldn't enslave.

If i may go out on a limb here, I quite liked it. The episode was a return to the fun of when Tennant first popped up and if anything reminded me of the fun that Ecclestons' character was (my favourate doctor of the RTD era).

The inclusion other doctor actually worked and added some spark back to the series and as long as you ignored the fact that the cybermen plot line was really just more of a distraction to the main storyline (something I think the Dr who puritans get their noses up about, 'What? Episodes being about soppy things like redemption, forgiveness and emotions and not naff men in rubber suits?').

Tennant was more on form than a lot of the previous episodes (I'm ignoring the ending to season 4 as that is on a scale of its own in awfulness) and actually seemed to be enjoying himself a bit. The nod to rose and the slight alteration of everything that is staple Dr Who was rather fun as well.

True the episode did have its downsides. The weird shaggy cyberman were never really explained and the episode was full of staple RTD themes(the doctors loneliness, loss, allowing the baddies to realise what they had done and feel sorry for themselves) but more often than not the episode worked. That big CGI cyber king was kick ass as well.

Well that my big pro RTDs Dr Who defense typed out. Might even post it as so as people of the internet can see both sides to the argument and learn that its ok to like things on the net ;)
