Edit: I am using a model provided by a poster (sms_117b), all the stuff that he added my friend said when he explained it to me, but I forgot when transferring it here. Sorry for confusion, but here is real equation.

This is an interesting string of equations that my friend came up with during school today, claiming that he "broke math". I don't really understand it but here it is anyway:

a = b

Multiply both sides by a
a * a = b * a

subtract b^2 from both sides
a^2 - b^2 = a * b - b^2

Expand to brackets
(a - b) * (a + b)= b * (a - b)

divide by (a - b)
a + b = b

2a = a as a = b

So what do you guys think? Does this make sense to you, or is my friend just an idiot?

You can't break maths, hes just an idiot with wrong equations.

EDIT: Unless a and b both equalled 0, but you could put anything then.

plus (a-b) = 0
So by multiplying both sides by zero, anything is equal to anything else.

1 x 0 = 1000000 x 0

Therefore, one equals a million?

Just corrected it a little, yes maths is broken!

no cuz you cant divide by zero so it doesnt cancel. also if a=b a^2=/=b excepting 1 and 0 and those hold up in the solution i.e. 2*0=0 and hmmm what about 1?

You dont even have to look at the equations - Your friend said he broke math, hes an idiot.

Edit : also, CAN a=2a is a better question - a is a variable.

No.

Far greater minds have tried and few have succeeded at breaking maths, so your friend is off his rocker thinking he stood a chance!

a^2=b^2.... [ Sorry I made a mistake copying it down, I believe this fixes it?]

a^2-b^2=ab-b^2

(a-b)(a+b)=b(a-b)

a+b= a

2a=a

So what do you guys think? Does this make sense to you, or is my friend just an idiot?

EDIT: I personally think its a load of bull, but I am by no means a mathematician.
It still is a stupid equation, and would only work if a and b were both 0.

Your friend didn't break maths, he just screwed up.
