I'm not totally clear what hipsters are. It seems to be a word similar to 'emo', in that it's something used in a derogatory sense about some other people, without anyone really identifying as such.

As far as I can tell, it seems to mean
'Them young people these days' or
'People who like indie things and things ironically'.

And that it refers to a lot of different social groups that don't necessarily have much to do with each other. I've been called a hipster for not liking popular movies like Transformers or Avatar. Or rather, apparently pretending not to like them.

What do you mean with a word 'hipster', does anyone call themselves that, and is being one a bad thing?

And how are they different from any other young people in the past?

The idiot at my school who walks around with huge headphones around his neck but never listens to them. He does more attention whoring things but that is the worst.
So, it's more about caring what other people think about them than actually liking those things?
That seems to be what that word is commonly used to mean.

But there has always been pretentious people who want attention. Were they hipsters too?

I thought the moment you call yourself a hipster, you are no longer a hipster?

If this is really the case, I've been calling myself one just to ward off the chance I might become one.

I don't think so. But this morning I did drink my coffee before it was cool.

One of my sisters calls herself a hipster. In jest.

She likes kind of oddball music.. but, not just to say she likes it.. she actually does. She also listens to popular stuff, though. And she's kind of a flower child type. Which is apparently pretty common in hipsters around here?

She's kind of like me, in that she doesn't really fit neatly into any group/label. So, she just picked the one she likes, I suppose.

I always thought the term hipster was an insult. So nobody should go around calling themselves hipster.

I always classed hipsters into two classes.

If it's mainstream Im not into it. Liking odd things to just be differnt.
and
skinny leg jeans, glasses, macbook etc.

That's the weird thing about hipsters; they claim to be non-conformist and not caring about what other people think, when actually it's like they care about those sorts of things more than anyone.

And no I don't think anyone calls themselves hipsters, at least not seriously. It's used as an insult by most people.

Nobody admits to being a hipster because hipsters are too mainstream. Admitting to being just like all the other 'unique' people makes one feel less unique : p

I like to poke at one of my friends a lot for being a hipster because she likes a lot of underground music and her glasses make her look like one.

A lot of things about me probably make me hipster-ish come to think of it : \

Anyone who says
"My gens music was better" and think they listen to better music,
or
"I liked that before it was cool/popular", because when they find out lots of people like the thing they like, they must insure dominance as king of liking that thing.

A lot of people identify themselves as Emo.

Even a lot of "scene" people think they are emo.

I don't waste my time wrapping my head around all the new labels the kids give themselves these days. Back in my day we had cool people, nerds, athletes and Hitler! Those were our labels!

I have been guilty of saying "I liked it before it was popular". It was that "How to Save a life" and "Hey Soul Sister" song.

But you would get sick of it you hear it so many times.. since its been overplayed in radios, tv shows and commercials everywhere.

Nowadays I just keep to myself.

One of the elements of hipsterness is not admitting to being a hipster. The only people who call themselves hipsters aren't actually hipsters.

Sometimes, the only thing more annoying than X trend is the people bitching about X trend. Coming from a metal music forum, I can validate that about hipsters.

I've never really met any hipsters who were in any way different than what is considered mainstream.

The hipster stereotype is indistinguishable to me from what's fashionable and trendy.

That's for outward appearances. Honestly I don't really care for people who act like stereotypical hipsters simply because a stereotypical hipster is an unlikeable douche.
