Due to an upcoming retrospective review i'm writing, I needed something to compare Twilight Princess's graphics to. Now, I have not played Shadow of the Colossus since my PS2 broke, so I was a little hazy on the details, and from my memories they looked remarkably similar. But, memories fade, so I found myself on Youtube looking up SoTC videos. The one I watched was the fight against The Fifth Colossus, the bird-like one on the lake. Now as I watched Wander swim to the beast, I found myself getting nervous. In life, I love being in or on the water. In games? It scares the living daylight outta me. For one thing, you can't see if somethings coming out from under you until it's too late to get away. You can't hear anything, period. You can't access your arsenal underwater, thus rendering you defenseless.

Mine is a fear of open water in gaming: what's yours?

TL:DR Version: What makes you scared in games?

I'm sometimes afraid that I didn't kill something, so I search the maps over and over for any living thing that needs a good shotgunning.

Going into mechanically loud places, like the dwemer ruins in Morrowind, those things scared the crap out of me. Although I did look through every one.

Being the last person in a game of search and destroy, and going into a necromancer dungeon in Oblivion without my night vision, and only torches.

I totally agree, I have been on so many games where I kill something in the single most distructive way EVER!, like on doom on the 360 I killed nasty ass zombie and seconds later back tracked my steps and I failed to see the body on the ground, corpses dont disapear that quickly! scared more of that one pissed off zombie then the flying heads, I kid u not...

my greatest fear in gaming is being the point man when you go into those little side rooms in left 4 dead because i know if i go in first that i'm going to get tank punched and die.

Don't forget the human heads on pikes!
Some of the noises in Morrowind's dungeons take getting used to but are not that bad to me.
I can't really think of anything aside from the really unnerving noises in this one oblivion mod called Mart's Monster Mod (I think), it had this ghost thing that would make a creepy screaming noise through out the dungeon and when you find it it charges you while screaming and paralyzes you for a few seconds... once I killed it but the screaming never went away... *shiver*

Doors.

Absolutely anything could be behind them, anything! Especially in shooters where they like to have enemies rush out of doors when your back is turned.

I hate it when in games like Dead Space or F.E.A.R. it gets really quiet and you know something is going to pop out and scare you. I don't mind the whole surprise factor, but it's the waiting i can't stand.

Mines the same as yours, water. It was from my youth when I played this demo on the playstation where you go underwater and search for treasure. I foudn this huge ship and I was like 'Great! tonnes of treasure in there'. As soon as I swam to the hole in the side of the ship a huge motherfucking mutant shark poked his head out. I nearly screamed at that point. Whenever there is huge open water in games I always imagine a huge shark or similar monster coming out of nowhere and nomming me.......nom nom nom

Carp.

If you play Dorf Fortress, you'll know what I mean...
Ah yes, undead carp. Though I have worse memories of Rhesus Macques...

Mine is a fear of missing a section of a cave/building/whatever and suddenly being tossed full on into the main story of a game, never to see that unexplored section on that character again...

I've actually become rather good at guessing which fork in the path leads to story content, and which has an optional treasure chest in it... so to speak.

Giant insects, although silly, can freak me out.

Fallout 3, hearing ants walking around, their giant legs skittering about.
It's a little unnerving for me.
