When i was a younger teenager i remember [footnote]Christ, saying that makes me feel old...[/footnote] how MSN used to be really popular. It was the bane of teachers and parents who saw it as distracting us from our homework, and I remember spending most of my evenings chatting away on MSN, making friends with people who i wouldn't have normally met, and all in all, having a fun time.

Anyway, then i go off to university. And due to some over-zealous and confusing firewalling on the university internet system, which has royally buggered my laptop over, i couldn't use MSN whilst i was at university. I eventually come back home, and nobody seems to be on MSN anymore.... Typically there is less than half a dozen people online for me now, and all those old friends i used to talk to are no longer online, so i'm losing touch with them.

So, do you often use MSN, or indeed Skype, Yahoo or AIM or whatever? Do you think these instant messaging services are less popular than they used to be? Or are my friends just being anti-social?

I personally think social networking sites like Facebook seem to have replaced instant messengers like MSN or AIM. I just use Steam these days myself as all my mates are gamers. I did use to use MSN back in highschool, so about 5 years ago or so. I don't really know anyone who uses it a lot any more either.

MSN is my main source of IM. It gets opened every time I turn on my computer, although, I have noticed a few friends switching to Facebook Chat and Yahoo.

Instant messengers aren't as popular as they used to, but some people still use them. I've got an active group of MSN using friends and I chat with someone almost at a daily basis.

I still use it, because most of my friends do. I don't use social networking sites or anything, so if I didn't then most of them wouldn't have any other way to contact me. They might actually have to *shock horror* see me in real life! Or call me.

Facebook chat has replaced them all more or less. I mean, its so much easier to use since you're already on Facebook and there's no need for user name shit.

I still use it, and you can find mine on my profile page

MSN is my primary IM. It's where I have my close, good friends. If I want to talk to that guy/retard I went to kindergarten with, or the psycho girl who added me because she wants to fuck my best friend, I use Facebook chat.

I use skype fairly often really. I've missplacd my dead-battery phone somewhere, and I'd be dead before I join facebook or twitter. Skype (or MSN) is the only way people can reach me...without meeting me in person.

Yes, it's switched on most of the time. Although I don't use the MSN messenger, I prefer Trillian for that.

I have it running while I'm doing other stuff, for email notifications mainly, and the occasional quick conversations. I don't like to instant message much though. So impersonal. Audio over skype and xbox live party chat I don't mind so much, as you're hearing the person rather than reading text.

I still use it.
Though i usually get on when i think about it.
If it doesn't come to mind or someone doesn't invite me to chat in a group i don't really give it much thought during the day.

It's pretty much the main source of IM here in Brisbane at least, apparently America uses AIM mostly. But I would agree that most people just use Facebook now as it's still instant messaging and there's more to do on Facebook than just chat.

Too bad the Facebook chat system is buggy as hell and often crashes hence why I stil use MSN.
