Does Deus Ex hold up?

So I tried playing deus ex for the first time a few months back, and beat the first level. After deciding that I had no fun with that level, and that I had a brand new copy of Shadow of the colossus staring me in the face, I gave up and went to play that.

What I want to know is if you guys think the game holds up today, as well as if the game gets better after the first level. I want to play this and the second before human revolution comes out because that game is looking awesome.

Thanks for any help!

The first level (Liberty Island) is the worst part of the game, thanks to it basically being a linear set of mission parameters that you have to meet (a popular way to open a game, but one that doesn't stand well to the test of time).

However, the rest of the game is absolutely a joy to play, even today, and holds up despite its horrendous graphics.

What exactly did you not have fun with? Telling us your particular issue might help.

The second won't have any links to Human Revolution, so I wouldn't bother.

As for the first, it depends how you play it. If you tried to run in shooting on the first level then no wonder you found it uninspiring.

Experiment.

Kill the guy you're supposed to let live in the statue, walk into the ladies toilets, use a grenade to unlock a wooden cabinet, etc.

I would actually recommend just running around the level to help you get your bearings and the number of ways in which you can tackle it.

You only have to meet one, and even then you can completely ignore what you're told to do when you find the guy you're looking for. And the "test of time" thing is an odd choice of words considering plenty of games nowadays rely on constant miniature set-pieces because you're not allowed to open doors for yourself.

That all I heard about leading up to playing the game was branching paths, and my only option was the climb the tower and chuck the grenades I had when I saw an enemy (At least, that's how I remember the level going) for that first level. I was un-amused so I gave up. Thanks to the others guys comment though it seems the rest of the game is not like this.

Hehe, I walked into the ladies bathroom the first time. Made me lol when my boss told me to not go in there.

The vagueness leads me to believe that this is the argument confusing "the game is badly designed" with "I am not interested in the genre/plot/ my attention span is too short." Not trying to blame you for not liking something, but with a game as well recognized for quality as Deus Ex, you should give specific reasons.

Edit: Yes, the game opens up and adds more gameplay options later, and I think that playing past the tutorial is all you really need to do.

Maybe it is. I really couldn't get into it. It might get good, but I really wasn't having enough fun to justify hanging around. I did get through the first mission, got to the city and did a couple of forgetable missions around there, but it still didn't interest me in the slightest to keep going. Is it supposed to have gotten good by then? If so, then I suppose it isn't for me.

I would say that the first level is the worst part of the game, oddly enough. Once you get used to the fact that early on in the game you can't go guns blazing (and won't be able to until quite late in the game), the game becomes a joy. You just need to be patient.

I think it stands up. I still play it. It's difficult, like really difficult but it's great fun. All the other levels are big and have many ways to solve the problems. Just play a little more, you'll most likely enjoy yourself.

NO IT DOESN'T. It's harder to make that more clear, the reasons people loved the game were all mainly that it was original for it's time. When I played it, and judged it by today's standards, it has sub-par gameplay, a weak story, events that are never fully explained, and the game misread several things that I did claiming that I did one thing when I did another.

You mean that Deus Ex isn't original by modern standards? Please point me in the direction of all the awesome open-ended exploration-based shooter/RPG hybrids that you're apparently playing.

And might I add "sub- par gameplay" and "claiming I did one thing when I did another." I would argue that the gameplay is not sub- par if you gave any indication of what you think was wrong with the mechanics. I would like to hear your problems with the plot, characters, or anything else you feel was wrong?

Speaking of horrendous graphics, here is a new mod that has recently come out for it. [http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision/news/new-vision-version-10-released] Enjoy.

I just got and played the game for the first time during this summer's steam sale.

I was also really disappointed by the first level. But after that, it really picks up. Honestly, Deus Ex does so many things right that games today still miss, and everything you've heard about multiple ways to play the game is true.

That said, the gameplay does tend to ware a bit thin sometimes, but it's an overall great experience.

I got it for the steam summer sale and I think it holds up pretty well (even if the control scheme is a bit obtuse).

Holy shit I love you, I've been waiting for them to do the graphics over haul for years. Nice to see that they finally finished it.
