Does "publisher" matter to you?

So by now most of us have seen that EA took their worst company prize once again, to me it begged the question that I'd been asking myself for some time now. Does publisher really matter?

I know as fans of certain properties and games in general we tend to be a bit more savvy than the average consumer when it comes to our hobby fodder, and as such we tend to discuss many of the finer points surrounding their creation and the companies that behind them, but for all of that discussion, for all of the raging that has been done over a game or a property (and I of course am including myself in that demo, not lampooning anyone or anything,) does it really matter?

Has a publisher or their bad decisions in the past caused you to think twice about or stopped you from buying a game?

I will say personally, that as much as I would like to think of myself as a fairly savvy consumer, the idea of not buying a game because of a publisher or the decisions they have made has never come up. I have noticed that I will look at a company that MAKES games and then the games themselves as almost entirely different entities. I am just in two different mindsets when I think about the two I guess.

While I will often be found shaking my head at the unscrupulous decisions and behavior exhibited by a publisher or developer while reading about them online, when physically in my local game store looking for a new title to play the connection is never made. I tend to look at a game on its merits, or at the very least on what I have heard and/or read about it. I never really even think twice about the company logos found in the corner of the box.

The only caveat to that for me actually, is that an exemplary publisher can convince me to buy a game I am wary of. The prime example is Atlus, who, over the years had proven to me that they are the kings of taking a game that looks like pure insanity at face value and turning it into a work of art. If I'm wary of trying a new game, and see their logo on the cover I will more often than not give it a shot.

So there is my personal introspection on the matter. Of course my logic is fairly flawed and I'm not sure why there is that disconnect, but it's probably not likely to change. What I am interested in however is knowing your thoughts on the matter, and even your experiences if a publisher or company behind making a game has ever heavily influenced your decision on playing the game itself.

I do, to some degree. Or really, it all depends on the company. In recent times, EA products haven't been so hot, they have been pushing out rushed games and questionable business practices, BUT....
What I always judge by, first and foremost, is what is displayed from the game. If a game interests me enough and looks good enough, I may just brush aside who the publisher is.

I care about the publisher to the extent that they affected the game. That is to say, I don't care about the publisher so much as the practices it takes on a case-by-case basis. If there's a 10$ game with no DRM that's well executed and for which I have all the reasons in the world to think I'll like, I don't care if it's Paradox or Activision written on the box, they've earned my dosh this time.

OK to be honest I skimmed your post as its long. I say yes, the publisher does matter, for one they fund games, in short they choose what games get made and that is a lot of power ~ its not in our interest for that power to be in the hands of asshats. Further more publishers use their power for force dubious anti-consumer practices such as pay to win micro transactions, day 1 DLC, heinous DRM e.g. always on.

Have I ever taken these things into consideration when buying games? hell yes.

Cool. Yeah I agree with all of that. I do of course recognize that yes, in the business of making games the publisher does matter. I guess I could have phrased my question better up front, as what I meant to ask is whether or not the publisher matters to you as a consumer, as in have you ever had a game in your hands or thought about buying one only to see it is from a terrible publisher and therefore pushed it away?

Of course it seems as though you answered that as well haha, but I just wanted to be clear as to what I meant.

It's never stopped me from buying a game. If it's from a publisher I hate (EA, Activision) then I just buy it used.

Only in the sense that there are cases where the interests of the publisher impact upon the quality and/or content of the game itself. Take, for instance, Dragon Age 2. Post release, Bioware was actually very vocal about how some of the acknowledged issues with the game were a direct result of being pushed to have the game out sooner than later given the surprise success that DA1 experienced.

I don't, however, ever look at a game box and go "Ewwww Activision? Totally not buying that!"

Well for the most part no but the prominent arsewipes I do keep an eye on.
What matters far more is the sort of shit they pull with the game in mind, as in I don't own an Origin only game, nor one that has always online, Uplay and GWFL I still tolerate to a very low extent, and if content got chopped before release... GG my money is going elsewhere.

If I want a game, I usually don't care who it's published by. When I don't really care what game I want to buy and am just browsing for anything that looks interesting, again publisher doesn't bias me but I know if it is by a big-name publisher like Activision or EA that it is probably more polished and generally AAA than an unknown.

Aside from wanting to avoid EA's latest bright idea they want shoe horn into their next big release and giving a wide berth to any game released by a publisher with a history of really bad DRM practices, I generally don't care who publish the game if the game is good.

In the end I just want to able to play games to have fun and not have to concern myself with the practices of the companies that publish them. Some publishers allow me to do this, others don't. However if they change and I then find their practices more agreeable I would buy their games also without concern, provided they are good of course.

I care about a game publisher as much as I care about about movie publishers. Not at all.

While I kina wish that EA wasn't publishing Bioware games, it's not going to affect my decions in buying one of there games. I'd still buy Dragon Age 3 day one even if it was published by Cthulhu.

Yes.

I will avoid anything with the EA logo, due to issues I have with them involving: DRM and game ownership, rushed production, content removal to sell later on as DLC, introduction of micro-transactions to paid games, and general sleezy business practice.

Ubisoft was similar with their Always Online DRM system (especially at that point my internet connection was a crappy 3G dongle that used a mobile network) but now with their Uplay system they are at 'grab when really cheap.' (FarCry 3 currently being the only exception).

It may sound really petty to automatically consign any work published by EA to the garbage pile, but it saved me allot of grief when ME3 came about and I will stand by it until EA improves, or collapses.

Unfortunately yes. There are quite a few games I've deliberately avoided which I might otherwise have purchased but for the decisions of a publisher. Mostly just Ubisoft and EA, but it's still frustrating.

If I really want to play a game from a publisher/developer I hate, I wait for a massive price drop.

I refused to buy L4D2 until it was at least $5 or less, and I'll probably wait for a similar price with Mass Effect 3.

So if I really want a game, the publisher won't stop me, and unless they're cartoonishly bad... I'll still buy it, but I'll give them the minimum amount. Intrusive DRM schemes are I think the only thing that would actually stop me from getting something I may have wanted.

I don't care about the publishers, but I do care about publisher influenced decisions. I haven't bought any of the Ubisoft limited install games even if I really wanted to play the game. I also will not be getting SimCity, due to a whole slew of design decisions I suspect came down from EA (though possibly they're Maxis' own stupid decisions).

On the other side, I generally love Paradox games, regardless of their bugs. But I will still generally wait until at least a few patches have been issued before getting their games.

In short, publisher name doesn't influence me (much), publisher influence does.

The only time it matters to me is if it happens to be EA or Activision publishing a game that interests me. If said game is published by either developer, I will look up various reviews and if they are positive. Then I will wait for a price drop, see if nothing bad comes up related to it, and then possibly buy it.

I don't really care at all about the publisher. I judge by a game to game basis. I am well informed and level headed enough about games that i will consider/refuse to buy them based on the practices applied to the Game (DLC etc.) rather than "popular opinion".
