Does the announcement of remakes/remasters of games make you want to play the original MORE or LESS?

It seems every time I hear about a game I like getting a remake or a remaster it tends to kill my drive to play the original, even before it's available. Maybe this has more to do with most of the games I like being rather long to complete, but I've noticed it several times.

Final Fantasy VII (PS1->PS4)
Final Fantasy XII (PS2->PS4)
Dragon Quest VIII (PS2->3DS)

This sometimes even happens in the case of sequels, such as Mount & Blade: Bannerlord killing my desire to play Warband for quite awhile now. I even sold my PS3 copy of Grand Theft Auto V when I heard it was coming to PC like 6 months before it ever released (to be fair it was pushed back several times).

Just curious how others feel about this. If you hear one of your favorite games is getting a modern remake, remaster, enhanced edition, etc. does it make you want to go back to play the original or do you feel doomed to hold out until you can play the new modern version?

I usually want to play the originals, even in cases like Serious Sam where the HD versions are exactly like the originals only better looking. I don't know why.

It depend on which game they choose for the remakes/ remaster mainly how old that game is.

Example- I wasn't thrill on The Last of Us remaster since it was only a year old but on the other hand I was fine with Resident Evil 1 and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes getting it cos they were several years olds.

I don't care about people making remasters, I only care if they're a) overpriced, b) shitty, c) the only goddamn thing being made.

Depends. With Call of Duty 4, I didn't care. I still bought the original.

.

COD4 remastered is useless. its same game with little bit of visual that they sold. and we PC gamers Mod games for better graphics for free of cost.

There is a difference between remake and remastered. System shock for example is Getting proper remake with new combat, soundtrack, enemy types etc.

Remaster; less.

Remake; depends.

I feel no need to play the original Resident Evil after having played the far superior REmake, but I instantly fired up Abe's Oddysee after the soulles trash that was New 'n Tasty. Same with Twin Snakes.

Why would I play an original when there is an objectively better version available?

Y'know, assuming they didn't fuck it up a la Silent Hill.

I only care about remasters if I haven't played the game before like TLoU or I really really loved the game like the Team ICO remaster.

Remakes are more interesting since they actually change things (for the better or worse).

It depends on if it is a definitive remake, or if it mucks around with what I knew about the original.

Some remakes basically replace the original, other remakes are really more reboots and basically different games.

To be honest the announcement of a remaster often neither makes me want to play the remaster or the remake unless it was a game I always wanted to play in which case I usually take the path of least resistance providing both were received well.

Remakes may get me interested in playing the newer one provided I enjoyed the old one as long as their altered vision looks interesting to me. It is unlikely to get me to replay the original however. If I was inclined to want to replay the original I would likely do it regardless of announcements or lack of.

There is obviously many examples of remakes, and even remasters, or enhanced ports where it's simply not as good as the original. In most cases it's YMMV like with the Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition, I love it, but many fans prefer the original (usually modded). Likewise I'd say it's often difficult to tell if a remake or remaster will be good before you can actually play it. I am looking forward to Final Fantasy 7 Remake but fully acknowledging I may end up hating it, I'm less apprehensive about FFXII Zodiac Age since it's more of an enhanced remaster but there's still a chance in both cases I may end up preferring the original to whatever they do. That being said, I still can't bring myself to invest the 50+ hours into either game currently knowing that I will probably just start over and do it again with the newer versions.

I know remasters is one of the reason I haven't bought a current generation console. Why pay full price on an old game when you can play the original games at a discount price?

Depends.

Original Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii is way better and more comfy than the 3DS port.

however i'd much rather play the Switch version of Mario Kart 8 since the Switch version won't have a Battle mode that's completely shit like the Wii U versions was

also the Switch version has my boy Dry Bones in it as well.

No, I definitely don't feel "doomed to hold out". It obviously makes me want to play the original less, but I don't see how this is a bad thing. I want to play the best possible versions of my favorite games.

Because 99% of the time remasters look and play better.
