Does the prison system work?

So last night I watched a documentary about life in prisons, it showed that it was basically a free hotel for the inmates. They all had TVs in their rooms, some even had games consoles, they get 3 meals a day and are provided with a choice of 5 meals. They were basically living a life of luxury,leading to a lot of the convicts to say that they would reoffend just because their lives were considerably better behind bars.

So I don't know haw the prisons are elsewhere in the world, but I feel that here in the UK it simply doesn't act as a deterent. What are your feeling on this and your own prisons?

Eh, that's the usual sensational rubbish.

Do you want to be locked up with a bunch of other criminals? You don't, do you?

Now, if you were locked up there for some time, you might find the outside world impossible to deal with, and want to go back, but that's another issus.

As a deterrent, they probably aren't great. As rehabilitation, also not great. A lot really needs to be done to fix the system, but simply making it harsher isn't a good idea...you'll be letting most of those people back on the streets after all.
