What do people think about the music in games? CDs or MP3s of the music from games are often considered to be collector's edition sort of extras, but I've often wondered whether when we buy the game we should have rights to ALL the content included there, including the soundtrack? Do you people think it's perfectly morally justifiable to either rip or download the music from games you already own instead of re-buying it in a soundtrack? (trying to avoid the general "Is piracy ok full-stop")

Feel free to also hit me with reccomendations for favorite game soundtrack :)

IF you bought the game and the soundtrack is not available ripping it or getting it otherwise is acceptable. If the soundtrack is being sold, and you want it you should buy it.

I see no reason why you shouldn't rip a game's music direct from the source even if the soundtrack is available. Often times the label will release a dinky soundtrack so that they can release an extended release or secondary releases (see Mass Effect 2). Sometimes, the music is just simply not included, and maybe your favorite theme was not included. In the case of a soundtrack not publicly released, I say more so. That may be the only way of ever listening to the score outside if the game.

Also, The Darkness has an incredible soundtrack, but it was never publicly released. There might be a rip, floating around the interwebs.

I've never felt guilty about it if that's what your asking. For the longest time I didn't even know they sold the soundtracks to video games so I figured ripping it from the 'Net was the only way to get my hands on it. And even afterwards some of the ones I'd have gladly payed for, I couldn't find anywhere.

Edit: I still can't find some of the music I enjoyed from Star Ocean 3.

I've been listening to the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII sounds track for about a week straight. It is so good, but it is my favorite game of all time, so that helps things.

I've put some games in before, and itunes opened them instead of the game launching. It was kind of funny actually.
If you know where to look it shouldn't be to hard to get the music out of the game file, and it would be piracy or anything because you kind of bought the game.

Well, let me tell you. I like owning good game music albums. And if I could find them, I'd buy them. Not always available, though. So, on that account, I say yes. I own the music of the game by virtue of having THE GAME ITSELF.
