I don't get it either, it just has a big B-Movie feel to me. It's cheesy, the storylines aren't very good, and it doesn't have very good production values. There's an occasional good episode (usually the ones with David Tennant) but most of it is pretty average to me.

That's a really conveient excuse. I've been hearing about this tv show ever since I've been on the internet but I've never seen a single episode. I have a season set on netflix but I wouldn't know where too start. Could one at least set up some sort of guidance and where to jump into the series to at the very least see what the hubub is?

The face changing thing stems from the original actor having to leave the show due to health issues in 1966, and yes the Daleks look pretty ridiculous, but the Doctor himself is a great character, and there is alot of lore to the Doctor Who universe that makes it easy to become interested in it.

First of all, taking it seriously will totally ruin the experience. It's supposed to be moderately camp. That's why my uncle hasn't watched it since the first Doctor. It was even less well made than Star Trek was.

It had a cult following or something, and they just kept making them. By the time the producers had enough money to give it good special effects, they got all over that. Now it's even more popular as a result, but they still don't forget that it's supposed to be a little bit lame anyway.

They have had a lot of interesting dramatic moments, and really artsy episodes, which are all really cool. They get to a lot of interesting historical events and such, and just have fun with it.

At least that's how I think of it. Just fun.

I started watching it, but the production quality is just terrible. I've seen more convincing youtube videos, regardless of how good the acting may be.

is anyone forcing you to watch it? if you dont enjoy a show dont watch it. if you dont understand it and dont want to watch it why do you need it to be explained?

its just a show that some people like and others dont. just like every other show. and from your explaination of the show you gave it sounds like you watched about 5 mins of one episode so ofcourse you wont understand it.

You forgot the toilet plunger.

Daleks are ridiculous looking, but they date back almost as far as the Doctor. I mean, they've outlasted cornier things. Now, they still remain because they're iconic. Near as I can figure, at least.

Doctor Who is a fantastic science fiction show, tremendous adventures and premises. The Daleks and Cybermen look silly, but they still manage to work. The storytelling and characters tend to be great. I'm not even sure what else to say.

Alright, I'll give you the explanation I give to friends who've yet to see the show (a very small minority I may add):

A crazy genius alien travels around travels through time and space saving the day, sometimes in the strangest way imaginable, and then goes of to do it again. In TV terms this means that the show can be pretty much whatever the script writers can come up with, be it battling an alien war machine in the far future, hanging out with Shakespeare or Madame de Pompadour, or saving present day Wales from whatever ills happen to befall it. Plus the 'Regeneration' angle gives them an easy explanation as to why there's a new guy in the blue box rather than just trying to pretend there's no difference.

As a premise, they can almost do whatever they want. Sure it's got B-movie Sci-Fi quality and production values at times, but how is that a bad thing?

THIS.

I've heard things about DW and never gave it much thought, but I recently got into the 2005 series (seasons are on netflix, watch season one and it'll start you on the right track) and I love it. :D

I was always a fan of the old Doctor Whos, these new ones don't fit with me well at all, but all my friends love it. Don't get why.

It's the freedom the show has. They can change the Doctor's personality, location, time, event etc. They can go from fighting an angry mob in the 12th century to running away for delaks 40 centuries later. Along with the Doctor's personality and Intelligence makes the show very likable to a large amount of people.

I can't stand it cause like most british television the production values are pretty community college lol.

I think the B-movie thing is because it's staying true to its 1960's feel. You gotta understand that in the 60's in Brittan this was ground breaking stuff! So I'm told be my folks at least. It was off the air for over 10 years I think but I'm glad they brought it back.

The regeneration thing is what has kept the series going for so long. It gives the show a chance to find great actors and writers who can explore the character of the Doctor. Not every doctor has been fantastic but there have really been some stand outs (Tom Baker if you can handle the 1970's production values).

As an Aussie I was raised on the show. You got to remember it's made for a British audience with different... sensibilities(?) to an American audience (not an America put down at all, we all know how stuffy the brits can be) so the action isn't what you'd expect from American Sci-Fi, nor is the main hero!

That being said it does come up with a lot of great ideas and some really stand out episodes and situations that always leave you asking "How's the doctor gonna get out of this one".

Not everyone?s cup of tea (as it were) but worth checking out!
