I was thinking of picking up Dragon Age Deluxe off Steam, Ive heard great things about it, but I am wondering how linear or open is the game? Like, Elder Scrolls level open world or what?

When traversing around the world, you get to a map-screen. Press where you want to go and you go there.

I'd call it semi-open. You aren't forced to follow the story, so it isn't linear, but you can't really walk around a huge sprawling world.

yeah. its not an open world rpg like GTA or Red Dead Redemption. Its a lot like Knights of the Old Republic.

That doesnt sound so bad.

Oh, something else just crossed my mind, for steam games, are you able to mod them? I swear I heard somewhere you cant mod Oblivion if you got it from steam.

Well, it's linear, but still still somewhat open world. Basically, you go to one town, do the quests, go to another town, do some more quests, etc. In Oblivion, you can go wherever you want whenever you want. In Dragon Age, your options are really dependent on the plot. That being said, there is still a great amount to do. There's a bit of a learning curve to start, but once you do, the combat can be quite fun. The greatest part, though, is the story. You can decide where the story goes, and make decisions that affect the ending. It's a great game and you should buy it.

It's not nearly as open as Oblivion, but it is as open as a game with a linear (and pretty impressive) story can be.
You have no timeline on completing anything, you can do stuff in pretty much any order, and you can do the sidequests at any time up until you initiate the final battle.
But you can't do the cool just messing around like in Oblivion, where I used to just go into people houses, fireball their bookcases so their books flew everywhere and did a jig on their dining room tables knocking their freshly cooked meals all over the floor.
I would definitely recommend it though. It has the best characters of any game I've ever played and, as long as you have a mage in your party, the combat is pretty fun.

Never heard of that before.

My dear old friend Furburt has tons of games from Steam he has modded. He spends his entire days playing Mount & Blade Warband with a diplomacy mod on.

You know, if you're not too busy, consider looking into Mount & Blade Warband. Any person I've ever met who played it got sucked in and hasn't recovered yet. It's an incredibly innovative RPG set in medieval times, where you play as an adventurer trying to seek your fortunes in the land of Caladria!

But now I'm off topic, so I'll shut up now.

I never played KotoR >.>( please dont come to my house with pitchforks and torches )
Go play that first, Kotor is ballin' out of control.

DA:O is hit and miss tbh.
You'll either really like it or think it blows, as a hardcore fantasy rpg fan I was kinda surprised to find my opinion of it negative.
Give it a try though at least, it's worth that.

well if you like more strategic combat rather than "RAR HACK AND SLASH AWAY!" then i think you'll like it, plus the world and characters are incredibly immersive

it illusions itself into a semi open world..but its mostly a bunch of linear paths that you pick from.

oh and if you want to mod the games

go to your program files (x86)

then open your steam folder

then steamapps

then common

then there is where all your games are located to mod

hope that helps

off topic: play knights of the old republic, you wont regret it ;]

(trying to hold back massive fanboynessnessness to that game)

really tho knights of the old republic has the same game mechanics and is somewhat of a star wars version of dragon age, so if you like either of those games im sure you'll like the other

so if your looking for a cheaper alternative first, try kotor first, otherwise, if you got the cash, go for dragon age!
