I have dreadlocks. They aren't
that hard to manage. But you do have to fix the ends and make sure the dreads don't get ruined. And you might want to get them fixed something like every second month, cause they will get fuzzy and hard to manage the first half-year. There is a technique to make them pure dreadlocks with no hair hanging out, but it's a bit scary. You burn it. Since there's not oxygen
in the dreadlocks, they won't burn up, but the hair hanging out will disappear. Although your hair will smell for quite a while.

Firstly don't believe the popular stereotypes about dreadlocks. They don't HAVE to smell. They CAN look neat. You CAN and SHOULD wash them every day. The reason why they get a bad name is because winos who have really thick hair but don't brush it or wash it get a "natural" dreadlock thing happening to their hair after a while, and people who are exposed to these street bums then assume that everyone's dreads are like that. Nothing could be further from the truth, dreadlocks can actually be a really fussy, high-maintenance hairstyle.
Thick hair helps. Plenty of internet info on how to dreadlock you hair so go a-googlin'.
No, you can't actually wash them often. I got mine fixed from someone who'd had dreadlocks for 7 years. If you wash them too often, they will get ruined. Either wash them a few times a month, or get them fixed every week. Sure, it's disgusting, but it's way too much work if you're going to wash often. But they don't
smell bad. That is somewhat of a myth. I've had mine for 5 months, and they don't smell bad. Except when they get wet (did I forgot to tell that? You smell like a wet dog when you soak them in water). But yes, thick hair helps, makes it easier to make dreads with reasonable size.
Oh, and another thing. It's not so painful to have them, but it's a real bi*** when you have to get them fixed. Yo will sit there for hours getting your hair pulled and twisted. I squirmed every time.
