I did some search fu, and haven't found a similar topic. If there is one - sorry.

The story is 95% of the time the thing I value the most in games (other 5% are games like Civilization which usually don't have the story at all), so whenever I'm out of games to play, the first thing I look for is some kind of story that gets recommendation from lot's of people. It's this time of the year right now.

Also, I discovered lately, that DS is actually a good platform in that department, although sometimes you have to dig deep to find all those gems. So far I played:

Phoenix Wright series (including Ace Attorney Investigations)
Professor Layton series (although thanks to the absurd amount of riddles [I know, I know, that's the point], the pacing of the story is a bit slow)
999
Ghost Trick, Phantom Detective
Hotel Dusk and its sequel Last Window
The World Ends With You

So, Escapist. What DS games you know, that actually have some interesting/emotionally gripping/amazing/whatever you call it story? It can be about anything, but bonus points will be granted if the game has some kind of dark mystery to solve.

I'm nearing the end of Dragon Quest IX. I've really enjoyed it. The story isn't some masterpiece, but it's still enjoyable and the gameplay is also enjoyable.

Infinite Space

A very unique game on the DS to be sure, and it has a pretty strong (and long) story attached to it.

Look into 999. Probably my favorite DS game story. Mind you, it's basically an interactive novel but I don't really mind them so much on portable systems.

I'd recommend

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Disgaea DS

Devil Survivor is kinda sorta similar to TWEWY, you're trapped in Tokyo for 7 days, and you need to find a way out/a way to end the lockdown. It diverges wildly in how these things came about and has some very interesting story branches, and a good NG+ mode for when you're going through a gaming drought. For Disgaea... I really enjoyed the story, even if it's more played for laughs than anything, the few times I does tug on your heartstrings, it tugs hard. My first time through, I got the bad ending... Yeah, I teared up. YOU WANNA MAKE SOMETHIN OF IT?!

Anywho, SMT games are always a good bet for an interesting story, if very weird, which is why I'd also say get SMT: Strange Journey. I haven't played it myself like I have Devil Survivor, but I've heard good things.

Games I've heard good things about, but haven't played myself:

Radiant History
Chrono Trigger (have played, but I didn't really like it..)
Etrian Odyssey

That's all I got.

Wait? You've played the Layton games and The World Ends With You? But, what I'm suppose to recommend, you've already played my default response! *Looks at above post* Yeah, Chrono Trigger, it's a classic. *sigh* For a second there I thought I'd have to think up an original post. Actually, Dragon Quest IX and Pokemon Black and White aren't bad either, yes I'm serious, they both kind of harken back to those classic 16-Bit JRPG's like Chrono Trigger.

Okamiden is pretty good. Maybe not as good as the original (one less area and it would have been better off) but still good.
