I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good RPG for the DS. If you could give reasons that would be awesome! thanks!
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Mario & Luigi: Partners in time were B-listers, but they're still good.Cheesepower5 said:Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of Starry Skies - Good RPG, with lots of classes and skill-sets and the unique, original town-by-town subplots the series has been known for since the 3rd game. Also, the DQ IV - VI remakes.
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey - Addictive sci-fi dungeon crawler with tons of demons to fuse and collect, an atmospheric, involved plot-line and challenging core mechanics.
SMT: Devil Survivor - It's strategy. It's SMT. It's got a great plot.
Pokemon Black / White Version - Do I need to explain? It's Pokemon. It's new. Get Platinum too, it's the only one where you can raise Houndour before the elite 4 without trading.
Suikoden Tierkreis - Not as good as, well, any other Suikoden game, but it's good in its own right. Hundreds of characters, well designed dungeons and a unique storyline make it a decent addition to the DS library.
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift - If you like the gameplay and class system from Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Advance, this is pretty much the perfection of the formula. If you're looking for the plot, then this is a lot more involved than the original Tactics Advance but ultimately still falls short of Advance's plot and especially Tactics' amazing one.
Final Fantasy IV - The definitive version of the game, augments and extra scenes alone really make this a lot better, and the graphics are an improvement upon III. A lot harder than other versions.
The World Ends With You - Best new Square game in ages. The story, characters and gameplay will hook you, and leveling up pins is oh-so-satisfying.
Knights in the Nightmare - A fresh take on SRPGs by combining them with bullet hell, it's a bit vague and simplistic at times but it works, and the soundtrack's great. Think Riviera without all the 13 year olds' sex fantasies.
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - Once again, shouldn't have to explain. It's Mario. And Luigi. They kick ass in Bowser's stomach while Bowser fucks shit up.
All I can think of right now, I'm sure you've played a few.
They should release Fire Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow in North America and Europe, it's a vast improvement on Shadow Dragon.sextus the crazy said:Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Mario & Luigi: Partners in time were B-listers, but they're still good.Cheesepower5 said:Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of Starry Skies - Good RPG, with lots of classes and skill-sets and the unique, original town-by-town subplots the series has been known for since the 3rd game. Also, Pokemon Heart Gold/ Soul Silver- the definitive versions of one of the best pokemon games.
Radiant Historia has a few interesting gameplay elements that make it cool.
See, now I'd advise the OP to play any pokemon game except the johto ones. Despite spending several hundred hours on Diamond and Platinum, I never managed to finish Heartgold because it got really boring towards the end and had tonnes of grind (at least for me, and I battled every trainer in Johto). Kanto also felt empty, and had next to no storyline in it- you were just travelling from city to city along deserted, boring routes.sextus the crazy said:Also, Pokemon Heart Gold/ Soul Silver- the definitive versions of one of the best pokemon games.
I've never heard of that game and after briefly reading up about it I'm getting it when I get the chance.Llil said:No one has mentioned my favourites yet, so I guess I'll have to do it. The Dark Spire and the Etrian Odyssey series (3 games). They're the first person dungeon crawler type games.
The Dark Spire I like because of how old-school it is. A real throwback to the PC RPGs from the "good old days". I also like how the combat is really tough (unless you're well overleveled, all fights are potentially lethal).
Etrian Odyssey 3 is my favourite of the three, but the other two are great as well. There isn't much of a story in the first 2 games (the biggest plot twist in EO1 is that there actually is a plot twist), but the exploration an combat make it well worth the time. I especially like how many customisation options the games give you regarding your party. The games are also really long and pretty challenging, so they'll keep you occupied for a while.
As for a more standard JRPGs, Radiant Historia is pretty good. And if for some reason you haven't played Chrono Trigger yet, that's an easy one to recommend.
Well I'm glad too. I keep mentioning it in almost all "recommend me a DS game" -threads I see, because it really needs more love. It's a great game but sadly not a very well known one.Fiz_The_Toaster said:I've never heard of that game and after briefly reading up about it I'm getting it when I get the chance.
Glad I came back to this thread.
I just looked online and it's like $60 new, so it must be good if it's that much years after it came out. The look of the game reminds me of Castlevania and some PC RPGs that used to around in the 90s.Llil said:Well I'm glad too. Basically, there's a wizard called Tyrhung who stole a necklace from the queen and retreated on top of a tower. Your job is to climb the tower and get it back. That's pretty much it. There are other characters you can meet, sidequests and some puzzles too, so it's not just dugeon crawling (only mostly). But the main quest is really just an excuse for you to go explore the tower.Fiz_The_Toaster said:I just looked online and it's like $60 new, so it must be good if it's that much years after it came out. Also, what's the gist of the game?
Oooooh, sounds like a game that I'd get lost in for quite a while.Llil said:Basically, there's a wizard called Tyrhung who stole a necklace from the queen and retreated on top of a tower. The game is really about exploring, leveling up your characters and fighting monsters.
You're very welcomeFiz_The_Toaster said:Oooooh, sounds like a game that I'd get lost in for quite a while.
Thanks for the recommendation and the info!![]()
I'll second these, as well as the ones Cheese posted. If you end up liking/loving Chrono Trigger, check out Radiant Historia. Most of the folks who worked on the dev team worked on Persona 3, and it's been compared to Chrono Trigger. A lot.xplosive59 said:Final Fantasy IV DS is a great remake and the Chrono Trigger port is awesome as well. Pokemon is an obvious choice.
