Duke Nukem Due for Resurgence in Coming Years

Duke Nukem's reputation has been decimated by poor handling, which looks to continue in the future unless some of the character's upcoming releases actually turn out to be good.

It seems that Duke Nukem really could be GameSauce [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96429-Duke-Nukem-on-the-Comeback-Trail] offers a few interesting statements from 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller on the Duke Nukem franchise, in addition to some figures on how the company has been able to stay in business over the years.

Miller alleges: "The next few years should see a strong resurgence in Duke." He points to many projects in development, some of which are due in 2010 though most still unannounced. One of these projects could be the Duke Nukem Trilogy, which is a set of three associated games for the PSP and DS that will be released separately and take place during different eras. Another may have something to do with the mysterious screenshot released on Duke Nukem's Facebook page in late November, and there are rumors swirling around various other possibilities as well.

Duke Nukem Forever is still one of those possibilities, with Miller reassuring us that he's "never said that Duke Nukem Forever has ceased development." 3D Realms has laid off [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/91788-3D-Realms-Is-Not-Closing] the game's internal development team, but still plans to most likely work with external development studios to develop the game. Miller even says if he could have done things differently he'd have "gotten rid of internal development earlier", as working with external studios is "much more cost effective for us, with lower risk."

Miller also offered a bit of proof as to just how much money can be made with this model, showing how 3D Realms has been able to stay afloat. 3D Realms worked with Remedy Entertainment on Max Payne, which Miller describes as his "biggest killing," revealing: "We made $30 million in royalties on that game (off of a $2.5 million investment), plus another $48 million selling the IP to our publisher." 3D Realms has also made big profits in the past, with a "25 times" return on its $300,000 investment in Duke Nukem 3D, and another "killing" made on Wolfenstein 3D. Along with lucky investments and profits from the sale of the Gathering of Developers to Take-Two, 3D Realms has earned a nice chunk of dough over the years. I'm just wondering how much it has also wasted on Duke Nukem Forever.

So there you have it, Duke Nukem Forever is far from dead, as is the franchise as a whole. The saddest part of the way the series has been handled is that the original Duke Nukem 3D was actually a really good game. It had cool weapons, fun level design, and a mature atmosphere. If I was 3D Realms I would have just slapped the original game into some sharp HD graphics and called it a day.

NEVER!

Alwys Bet on Duke! ^^

Anyway, IF that screenshot is anything to go by, and IF that trailer briefly mentioned by Scott Miller IS as awesome as he made out, then there may be some hope yet.

When in a group, and someone makes a joke that no one finds funny, it's customary to point to everyone in the group and look around before saying, "anyone? Nope? OK then."

I'd like to apply a virtual one of those, about giving a shit about this game.

so, hold on second, does this mean that in another 20 odd years we might still be laughing at how Duke Nukem Forever hasn't been released yet?

I second this, I played Duke Nukem 3D and it was nothing special.
The only reason he still exists is because he's just so damn manly.

And the saga lives on.

Side note, the shrink ray is still probably the best weapon ever in a fps.

the idea of a just taking the original and slap some hd on it isn't to bad, but 3d realms are far beyond the place where they can just do that, maybe some modders could, like the black mesa project, did they ever release that btw?

You know, I'm just not so sure I care anymore. Duke Nukem was a great game for its time, but maybe these days of gaming are just not built for another Duke Nukem game... really though, what can they bring to the table that hasn't been done and overdone anyway? Can't quite say I was impressed with any of the Duke Nukem Forever stuff that ended up getting leaked... Let's just move on already. And if we aren't gonna just move on, lets shoot for less talk and more action.

The development will go on...forever.
All is as it should be and all is right with the world!

Now, to have a hope for success upon release, they are going to have to take a bit of whatever worked in every other 1st Person Shooter or action game then top that to justify its revival when better concepts out there were allowed to die ignominious deaths.

That's a pretty dang tall order, so Duke might have to settle for chewing bubblegum, for now.

Wait...

So I can still make the "I'm still waiting for DNF to come out" joke? Oh happy days.

I hear that Miller was the sole reason for all of the delays, according to former employees.

Oh well.

I think they've just invented "Zombieware": "Vaporware that just will not die!"

Watch it come out two weeks before the end of PC gaming as we know it.

I'm divided. When I see news like this, I think like this too. But deep iside I would like a new DN 3D game, it was great back then.

I genuinely hope it does come out so I can marvel at the disbelief of all those who said it wouldn't happen.

I hope it will keep to what FPS' were like back in the day when one could carry more than 3 guns, like Quake.
