Dungeon Crawlers: basically you are a hero of any given race/profession inside a dungeon (which may or may not contain dragons).

what i was wondering. what are the best dungeon crawlers out there? any suggestions? recommendations?

# Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance series
# Diablo series
# Dungeon Siege series
# The Elder Scrolls: Arena
# Gauntlet

these are all pretty famous, everybody knows about them...but are there any others that NEED to be mentioned. put it up even if it is a small independent published game that only has 2hours of solid entertainment. the only condition it has to be fun FUN.

Personally, I'm not too into dungeon crawlers, but Marvel: Ultimate Alliance might be worth a go, as it's a refreshing change of pace from the medieval fantasy-ish themes of most dungeon crawlers. It also offers a tiny bit more combat depth with stuff like jumping and throwing enemies/objects. Quite a bit of replay value if you actually enjoy playing as all of the different characters.

I'm not much for most dungeon crawlers, but I love the Zork series, which is like, the first dungeon crawler ever created. :D

What if it's a party of heroes? I loved the Might & Magic series, way back from the Commodore64 days, right up to (and including) M&M VII. They lost their way after that, but it was oodles of fun up until then.

But my first true dungeon crawling love was Dungeon Master on the Atari 520ST. Watching your torches slowly burn out in real time while you struggled to find a safe spot to rest and regain your mana was a hell of a time, and totally unlike anything that had been made up until then.

Honourable mentions:
The Ultima series (including Ultima Underworld)
Fate (like diablo, except everything's cute)
Temple of Apshai
Eye of the Beholder series
Temple of Elemental Evil

Nethack without a doubt. I once almost got locked in my school, because a friend and I were both playing Nethack and hardly noticed it was 6 o'clock.

What's more fun than eating yellow mold?

Sacred and Titan Quest were both great games. Also, Lords of Magic had its moments.

I second.. or third the original Zelda, Champions of Norrath, and the Eye of the Beholder Series.
A few of my favorites that I *still* play (played Bard's Tale 2 last night):
Bard's Tale 1-3
The '3d' ADnD games: Menzoberranzan(spelling?), Ravenloft 1, 2
Dungeonhack
Wizardry (all of 'em)
New-er ones I like:
Orks n Elves-DS
Etrian Oddesey-DS--awesome game!
My mini-dream is that some hyper-intelligent person makes a workable dos emulator for the DS that I can run on my homebrew card so I can take these great games with me.

Anyone here play an old Epic Megagames title called Ancients? (Shareware version was Ancients I: Deathwatch)

Classic AD&D style game, REALLY fun and addictive. I knew nothing much about D&D back when this was out, and for the life of me, back then I just could never wrap my mind around why I couldn't give the mage and priest a Bow like my thief and fighter had, but DAMN was it a blast. I had the full version back then, and it was the first RPG I ever beat... Killed a red dragon to do it.

Oh, and Monodiabloloco, how is Orcs n Elves? I've seen it on the shelf for cheap and wonder if thats because it's not that good, or just because its an older title, or what?
I will have to look for that Ancients 1 game. I love older RPGs.
Orks n Elves is pretty fun. If you have ever played Dungeon Hack.. that old '1st person' DnD game from way back when, it's sorta like that with more of a story (well ANY story is more than DH had..). The only beef that you may have is the graphics. They were ported from a phone game, so a bit.. Meh... but it's still a pretty fun game.
