After months of teases and hints at its development, Koei has officially revealed Dynasty Warriors 9 (Shin Sangokumusou 8).

Along with the teaser comes the confirmation of the newest addition to the roster, Zhou Cang. Zhou Cang was a fictional officer who intially fought for the Yellow Turbans before joining Liu Bei and fighting under Guan Yu.

Koei also announced that all characters as of DW8E will be returning and they will only be adding a relatively small amount of new characters.
The game will also feature a reworked battle system instead of the usual square/light and triangle/charge system, though the musou system appears to be the same.
The biggest change that has been announced is that it will be an open world. They haven't said how that will be implemented though.

Let's see how it goes.

For me the height of the series is still Dynasty Warriors 3-4-5 but i'd love nothing more then for that to change.

Chinese Robin Hood looks allright'.

I swear, I think I'm the only person that actually enjoyed DW6...well, at least it's Empires iteration. But I've always been more of a fan of the Empires spin-offs than the core games since I've seen the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story told so many times. Basically all that's left is "I wonder how they'll do the level where (fill in the blank with a famous general) dies this time."

I dunno, though...I'll have to wait and see what they do with this whole "open world" thing, but I may end up giving this one a pass. Though now that I think about it...if they're going open world then it means the campaign won't necessarily be bound to specific characters or even factions. Mayhaps we'll see a return of Create-A-General characters in story mode! That'd be pretty sweet. :D

I'm so excited! Koei did so much right with DW8 after the disappointment that was 7. I'm also glad to hear they're reworking combat. I hope it's better recieved than the Renbu System from 6. And the switch to open world has me intrigued, specifically because of the effect it may have on the inevitable Empire game. Geez,, I haven't been to the Koei Warriors forum in a while. I guess it's time to pay them a visit!

Nah, I was pretty okay with DW6, personally. It was almost worth buying for the hilariously over-the-top Lu Bu campaign alone. Something about intruding on famous battles, beating up all armies involved until everyone gets so fed up with you that they unite as one to defeat you (complete with all three rulers crossing their swords in solidarity) and even conjure up the ghosts of Dong Zhuo and Zhang Jiao to help them... yeah, it was an awesome ride.

I'd argue that the games have only really been telling the story of R3K since DW7, though. For the most part before that they were just what-if scenarios where the general-you-selected's army won every battle in their campaign.

Finally. I hope they add Yuan Shu. He is far too involved to still be generic. I would have preferred Liao Hua for Shu, and if its going to be a small number of new characters, it seems unlikely they would add Liao Hua AND Zhuo Cang.

The open world thing is probably for their Conquest Mode. I cant imagine they'd ditch the story mode, but we will see. Dynasty Warriors is a more experimental series than people give it credit for.

That's one of the reasons I liked it so much as well: Lu Bu's campaign was just all sorts of fun. I too really enjoyed the last mission where it's literally every ruler in the game all united against you.

True, but they all still followed the same storyline: Yellow Turban Rebellion, kicking Dong Zhou's butt, a few filler missions for Wu and Shu while Wei deals with Yuan Shao, Battle of Chi Bi, etc etc etc. I did enjoy DW8's telling of the story, and obviously each game brings new maps.

I dunno...I've sworn off the series a number of times...but I always end up coming back. Might be done for good this time, though........unless they come out with Orochi Empires or something, featuring allllllll the characters from Warriors Orochi 3. :p

These are the dumbest games.

When can I buy it?
Probably Play Asia when it comes out in Japan. I hope you can read Japanese.

Me, I'll keep a lookout. If KT is serious about changing up the gameplay, I might consider getting it at full price and not used.

I just find it funny that this was announced the same day I was watching John Woo's Three Kingdoms epic Red Cliff. The open world idea sounds intriguing, but the sheer size they would need to achieve would be outrageous; I'm talking Xenoblade X size at the bare minimum. Plus they'd have to find justification for the open world as a sandbox needs to provide reasons to get lost in the sandbox without just being tedious and also not being reduced to a boring commute.

So the open world rumor turned out to be true. I don't think its a very good fit with the DW gameplay but I'm open to being wrong on that.

I'm not exactly hyped due to ranking Dynasty warriors so much lower than Samurai Warriors though.

I hope they expand on the later era of the kingdoms more. Jin arguably has the strongest cast and they are a bit wasted when they fight generic losers half of the time.

Yay! More open world game...

Well here's hoping it's not just going to another off line mmo where you just do a bunch of boring repetitive quest.

The Jin clan I definitely found the most fun, interesting, and invested in when playing DW 8: XLC. I wen out of my way to complete their "what if" scenario first. I wanted to see more of Sima Yi and his wife Zang Chunua. Even in the alternate scenario, you don't get enough of them.
