EA Gets Tough With Edge Games

2009 isn't getting any sunnier for Tim Langdell: In the latest blow to the Edge Games honcho, Electronic Arts [http://www.ea.com] has filed a petition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel numerous trademarks currently registered to his company.

Langdell has earned a reputation in the game industry for his zealous protection of the Edge trademark; his Mobigame [http://www.edgegames.com/] over its release of a popular iPhone game called Edge. Perhaps unexpectedly, Mobigame fought back tenaciously, drawing a lot of attention and shining an unwanted light on some of Edge Games' less-than-savory tactics over the years.

Now, like the Italian army charging into France, EA has leaped into the fray, asking the PTO to Mirror's Edge [http://ttabvue.uspto.gov/ttabvue/v?pno=92051465], the primary-colored parkour game that came out in late 2008. Edge Games has "continuously threatened" to sue EA since its release, the company said, and now it's decided to push back.

"While this seems like a small issue for EA, we think that filing the complaint is the right thing to do for the developer community," the publisher said in a statement. "A lot of small developers who are faced with this situation settle claims because they don't know how, or can't afford to fight for their rights. We hope that as a result of this action, other developers will be less intimidated by unwarranted legal threats."

Obviously EA's motives aren't entirely altruistic but if other developers benefit as a result, I don't think anyone is going to complain too loudly. Except perhaps Dr. Langdell himself; in a statement to Gamasutra [http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=25448], an Edge Games representative said, "This petition by EA is clearly a desperate attempt by EA to see if they can win the right to use Mirror's Edge by forcibly removing Edge's legitimate rights to [the trademark] Edge. None of EA/Dice's claims in its petition have any basis in fact and their petition is thus certain to fail."

Did I read it right when he said he wanted to sue EA because Mirror's Edge has Edge in the title?

If everyone did that then what we call the f*cking games?!

What an idiot.

Oh boy, EA is going to bury them. About time too, this was getting preposterous...

Yeah I know. Although EA has seemed to be pulling its act together as of late, what with Dead Space turning out to be rather bloody good and the first bf2 update in 2 years. If it can pull this off and win the fight against Langdell, thereby winning it for the underdog too, they will earn a place in my heart forever.

I've had frequent email feuds with mr Langdell, who, hilariously defends his position that he's the innocent one suffering.

I think the devil gave them back their souls when he took control of Activision.

Perhaps every dveloper in the US should release a co-developed game called Edge, or to be really obtuse, Ej? Langdell would explode in a cloud of righteous indignation and bile...

...never thought I'd say this, but go EA.

i read this earlier today and thought it was great, i love that EA is stepping up to the plate with their army of lawyers. it's not fun having an 800 pound gorilla charging at you

i don't see how he can keep this trademark, i can understand only the word edge but not holding it over "mirror's edge" cause it's different

I honestly hope EA crushes him so bad that he is forced to live in a cardboard box. EA probably has more lawyers than Edge has employee's.

It seems ever more so. I remember EA being the ire of the gaming community for it's DRM. Now that hate has apparently switched to Activision, while EA tries to rebuild community trust.

I also really hate that picture.

Although I did see this coming (as did everyone else, probably), I had hoped Langdell wouldn't be stupid enough to go against the corporate megabehemoth that is EA.

Here's hoping he turns up to the inevitable hearing wearing a T-shirt with "I WANTZ MOAR MUNYZ LOL" written on it.

You go EA!!
what Langdell was claming with his "copyright's" junk is just dumb.
its like trying to say a parent cant name their kid Bob because a company named
Bob studios holds a copyright.

If i read that right they didn't actually sue EA, just threatened to (probably hoping for a "here's a check, now shut your stupid mouth" settlement) It's EA that went after edge

Kinda reminds me of a 5th grader bullying a 3rd grader, then getting his ass kicked by a mafia hitman with a baseball bat (that's probably how it feels like getting trampled by EA)
I sure hope they teach them the meaning of "eating dirt"
