I'd hope this particular subject would be more popular today than Ayn Rand, but apparently that's worthy of two threads and Earth Day gets zero.

Actual Big Problem Facing Us All: How to treat Earth more kindly, without annoying everyone around you and being a Damn Dirty Hippie?

Discuss.

Recycle, drive less, consume more conscientiously and shut the fuck up about the fact that you do these things.

After getting bombarded with this for the last two years I don't really feel like discussing it.
Like every other day.

There is no need to treat the earth more kindly. There is, however, a need to treat the earth in a way that won't end up killing us.

I just want people to stop trying to "save the earth". The earth is fine, we can't do anything to hurt it. But we can fuck up the living conditions here so much that we won't be able to live here. That we should avoid. Don't save the earth, save humanity.

I think I'll keep driving my classic car that gets six miles to the gallon, burning oil for heat and forgetting to recycle... why? Well mostly cause I'm a hoofty prick that's why.
But seriously, I do try to use a more efficient power. If I could figure out how to make a clean burning car, I'd build it. At my job, we install solar power for large businesses. So I figure I come out about even for my vices and virtues.

Your answer, of course, is SCIENCE!

Our biggest focus in this regard should be replacing combustion-based energy generation with renewable electricity generation. We really have made leaps and bounds in terms of electricity generation in recent years, but unfortunately we haven't made much progress in battery technology. We've got Lithium-ion batteries now, which are capable of about four times the storage efficiency of lead-acid batteries... but we really haven't made a stride past that.
But the issue here isn't really what we're capable of producing, it's what we are producing. In an industrial economy, we could have solar panels and wind generators on every home or business in the first world, with long-distance trucking and public transportation running on electricity by now. Unfortunately, the richest parts of the world economy are all entertainment-based. We could solve this if we weren't throwing most of our money at entertainment mediums.

In short, individual efforts in our daily lives make very little difference. What we need is a change in industry.
