Recently I've discovered that I really like Electronic Body Music thanks to a friend buying my VNV Nation's "Empires". I loved the album, got hold of all their others and went to see them live. It was an absolutely fantastic gig and I ended up getting an album by the support group Straftanz. One of the people I went to the gig with suggested I get into Rotersand, so I got my hands on all of their stuff too and absolutely love it.

I think part of this is that I'm a big fan of trance and EBM is kinda the closest thing you can get to decent trance these days, albeit well heavier. I was wondering if anyone on The Escapist likes Industrial Dance or EBM and can give me some hints on who to check out next?

Try stuff on Stay up Forever (label). It's a bit soft for me and I don't know if it's still going but you'd probably like it. Otherwise, Hallucinogen (artist) still probably pump out Hippy/acid trance. Cluster (label) is good but kinda heavy for you I'd imagine.

Buuuuhhh...there's so many different artists and labels it's kinda difficult to recommend stuff. Hardcore techno & variations thereof was always my thing.

Where do you live? (EDIT: Durrr, Leicester, you should move to Manchester or London, lots more record shops)) and are we talking about vinyl or CD/mp3, 'cause unless you want the former I'm going to be severely limited in advising anything. Also your avatar suggests that I may not have a clue about the sort of stuff you'd like, was never really into commercial dance music. Carl Cox and Colin Faver? Or is that too obvious?

My record collection is sitting right next to me so I could have a look thru if you like, but it's pretty much...ooh get Amphetamine by Thomas P. Heckman NOW!...older stuff that you'd have to go digging for.

Hmm..I don't know if it's what you're after, as I'm more into cyber-goth, but there are some bands that I like. Maybe these will be of some use to you - not really up on my musical lingo so got no idea if they're included in EBM/Industrial or not.

Cheers, I'll have a mooch around the net see what i can find on the ones you suggested. I am kinda into commercial dance, but more the Euphoric/Balearic stuff of about 10-15 years ago. Leicester has the Autonomy EBM/Hardstyle night which is pretty good. I like Industrial insofar as the likes of NIN and a couple of people have suggested Combichrist, Skinny Puppy and Ministry. I dunno really, I'll give anything a go at least once, thanks!

That wasn't the question. Nobody asked about what you think of it.

I'm not really that much into the whole EBM/industrial thing (I like NIN but that's a different beast) apart from VNV Nation, but check out Grendel if you're looking for something slightly more abrasive than VNV. I especially like his Harsh Generation album.

Aesthetic Perfection, Combichrist, and Suicide Commando are cool too.

You are welcome.

Those are two of their best songs, others include:

Ground (Album Version)
Human
Apart
Purgatory
Sorry
Crush
Complacent

They have some great slow songs too but as you seem to be after the more danceable stuff I shan't list them (they are my favourite band so I have all their songs, bar a few remixes).

I am also seeing them live in February, although that's not very relevant.

Hmm, I used to have a bunch of that on free CD's from Music mag etc but I got rid of them years ago. Ummmm....They're always bringing out compilations of that sort of stuff, shouldn't be hard to find a compilation album and go from there.

Also: here's amphetamine searched for you:

wow i'm kinda shocked no one has mentioned the kings and creators of EBM, also known as Front 242. they started EBM in the early 80s and still have 20 year old songs that sound really good.

VNV do a cover of Quite Unusual, that's a carbon copy of the song cause it's such an awesome song.

there is also Nitzer Ebb, a bit more industrial than EBM tho

Decoded Feedback, awesome band and pretty cool tho i only met Marco

there is also :WUMPSCUT: as a tip there's no "correct" way to pronounce the name. it's however you want to pronounce it.

FiendFlug, my friend calls them Terror Techno cause they aren't really EBM and have no vocals.

i posted this song before but it's their song with the Techno Viking video

The Retrosic, pretty freaking awesome but on the harsh side and Bombs has the BEST SAMPLE EVER

Das Ich

VNV singing the song
[youtubehoC8h5ySFKw]

also Melotron

then there's the kings of Canadian EBM, Frontline Assembly and all their associated acts. they are one of the rare cases where their side project, Delerium, has gotten more mainstream success than the main band

FLA

Delerium

my personal fav song, got to see them sing it live and was up front and sexy doesn't begin to describe it

i think that should give you a good start

Ayria, KMFDM, Front 242, FiendFlug, Reaxion Guerilla, Sisters of Mercy, Nitzer Ebb, Corvus Corax, Die Krupps etc...

btw, Die Krupps, Sisters of Mercy, and Corvus Corax, even if they aren't so into this industrial stuff, they kickass!

I started listening with Front Line Assembly and Front 242 and to this day they're still the bands that I like best, even though both have their ups and downs musically. You have to get the right albums. I also really liked Cubanate because I liked it that they annoyed metalheads by being too dancey and industrial fans by being too metal - they just found that sweet spot that fucked everyone off. Other than that most of the artists other people have been posting here are decent and worth a look.

That's right bitches, I just posted a comprehensive guide to modern trace music in response to one little sentence.
Industrial fans tend to mostly really hate trance though, and would probably label every single link you've provided under "that weak-ass techno/dance music" instead of "things I'm interested in". There's almost no crossover between the genres, and even the industrial genres that DID veer a little sonically toward more commonly accepted dance music styles just by virtue of using the same equipment and borrowing a few cliches of the genre (like all that Digital Hardcore stuff) did their very best to ideologically distance themselves from trance, house, techno, [fill in the blank] etc by encouraging their fans to beat up ravers and stuff. I know you're about to say "but the stuff I posted isn't rave music" but to an industrial fan all subgenres of techno/dance/trance/[whatever] are indistinguishable because they just don't care, so to them it's all "rave" or "techno" or whatever. Industrial music has different structural rules, as well as different rules regarding texture and mood, and also a vastly different ideological statement, and I reckon less than 5% of EBM/industrial dance fans would like your links or listen to any of them for more than 10 seconds each.

Considering the OP said he was a fan of trance (especially Balearic/Euphoric) it was a fairly appropriate post to make though eh?

one of my friends who used to do an EBM/Industrial radio show called EBM/Industrial intelligent dance music and said that people who aren't smart listen to trance and techno. the closet thing he liked that was technoish was FiendFlug.

i tend to agree most EBM/Industrial fans don't like techno, even the ones that hear it soon convert and stop liking techno.

as for Cubante and Front 242, members of both formed C-Tec/Cybertec, if you didn't know

I never realised Delerium's other stuff was anything like this, the Tiesto "Search Of Sunrise" mix of Silence is my favourite trance track, but the original version is amazing!
