Eggnog...???

Okay well... I'm an Australian female who is looking for something different this X-mas....
Well... I have always been interested in the American love for eggnog (sorry to use the stereotype). I have a few questions:
How is it drank/eaten? Hot? Cold?
Do you use bourbon or rum??
Do people really love it as much as they say they do?
Some people say you dont need to cook it over a stove??

Also what does it taste like O.O I plan on making it this weekend and a experiment

Oh boy.
I drink it cold, without any kind of alcohol in it at all.
It is truly my favorite part of the season, else I wouldn't have clicked the thread named Eggnog...???
And the stuff I drink is not cooked on a stove.

It's taste is another matter entirely.
...I'm not sure how to describe it since there isn't anything that I've had that tastes like it.

Oh, and is there really a stereotype for Americans and Eggnog? I've never heard that one before, I thought that it was an international drink.

I drink it cold, but it's best to drink it in small doses in my opinion. Too much at one time is a bit nauseating.

Think cinnamon-flavored milk and you have a close approximation of egg nog.

I... honestly didn't know the 'nog was an American thing. I figured it was all over. Well... not all over. Doubt they have it in certain places, but... you get what I mean.

Some people love it as much as they say they do. I sure do. But I usually drink it just on it's own, no alcohol (I'm not a big drinker).

As for how it tastes, well... it tastes like... egg nog. I really can't describe it. It's one of the most unique tasting things I've ever... er... tasted.

Give it a shot (literally if that's your style). Let us know what you think.

Oh, and this is going to make me sound like BIG FAT 'MERICAN, but if there are McDonalds down under (there are, right? I'm assuming yes) try their egg nog... thing. Shake thing. I don't know exactly what it's called. But it's, IMO, better than regular egg nog, if you don't mind the thicker, frappe like texture.

I agree on the "too much at one time" thing. It really can make you feel sick if you chug it down too much.

But, cinnamon? I've never tasted cinnamon in egg nog. Trust me, I'd have thrown up >_> ain't allergic, but a strong taste/smell of cinnamon makes my stomach churn. Different type? A regional thing, maybe?

Is it meant to be drunk with alcohol in it? or is it just depending on a persons taste?

Erm..... we have McDonalds but....well... Australia in general doesnt really drink eggnog... i think its in the big stores sometimes but i havent seen it in a while (thats why im making my own)... that being said there is no way we get Macca's eggnog XD its just like how Japanese McDonalds have teriyaki burgers and all we have is these ridiculous cheese burgers

Eggnog is a little thick but not like custard, more like...I can't think of something to compare it to, but not as think as custard.

It is rich, so just be warned.

Yes it is thick, but more like a cream than custard. Unless you get a different recipe that is heavier in milk it will be rich and thick.
Also you don't know about Hot Apple Cider? My aren't we sharing culture this fine day.

love it, can't get enough of it. It reminds me of Christmas and Santa and presents and my childhood.

....how do you eat Eggnog? As for drinking it, I've never had it warm (eww), always have it cold. If you want to know what it taste like, think of the spice nutmeg.

Off topic question, while were discussing things you consume, do most Australians like Vegemite? No offense but that looks gross.

well it can technically, but I always thought of it as a kids drink. I guess putting alcohol in eggnog is like putting alcohol in orange juice or milk. Sure if you like drinking white russians or screw drives that's fine, but that's not the original intent (imo).

I personally like vegemite but in a SMALL amount on toast. They recently made this thing called "cheesey-mite" (i think that was it) where its like 50% vegemite and 50% cream cheese spread because a lot of people dont like it as much as they used to. I know a lot of people who don't like vegemite and i know a lot who LOVE it. my dad adores it where as my mum can't deal with it. it all depends on taste i suppose.

The best way to describe a good egg nog the way I have always had it.

Cold, small bit of rum (shot or 3/4 shot in 8oz) with a dash of nutmeg on top.

It is somewhat heavy like a cream, the taste and consistency is something like a melted shake, with a hint of the rum and nutmeg.
