Any Mexicans around? cause today, 199 years ago, was the famous (or infamous) grito (literally, shout) that started the Mexican Independence. I as a mexican, think that it was the wrong way to start our independence from a european power and that Miguel Hidalgo, thought of as the Father of Mexico, was actually just an overzealous priest, who started a war that we barely won, and told a bunch of unarmed, uneducated, unorganized, unprepared natives and meztizos to charge against the Spanish Army. Sorry if this is turning into a rant... still, wanted to know if anyone around wanted to discuss this.

Miguel Hidalgo was a priest, who when the king in Spain changed, declared that everyone should rise in arms (or the closest weapon-like thing around). This was mainly because the new king said the Viceroy diden't have to be a bishop anymore, priests no longer had to convert people to catholicism and that catholicism should not be the only religion accepted. (im catholic so im not just being a jerk against catholics.)

Yes im aware of the history, so this a rant against catholics? Im not sure exactly where you want to go with this. Sure its a stupid reason to start anything, but by that time catholicism was so ingrained into the population. Also it was just the spark really, the war would have come in any case, be it by that course of action or any other.
I too am puzzled as to what it attempting to be achieved with this.

Okay, I was just intrested if anyone wanted to discuss the grito with me, otherwise, I completely agree with you. I just dont like that we celebrate Hidalgo as the biggest hero of Mexico, and I am desperate at the severe lack of education and general state of my country. Mostly, it was rant against this. On the bright retrospect, I shouldent have brought this online... I just needed to vent.
