They talk about how this could adjust work levels to promote worker well-being, but I find it far more likely that workplaces will use them to punish any worker who isn't sufficiently "motivated" (i.e. stressed-out).

"Mr. Coleman, our readings show that you're only giving 100% at your job. As you know, here at ConHugeCo, we expect nothing less than 140% from all of our employees, every second of the day."

Yes.

There is no form of monitoring that bosses will not consider as a way to monitor you on your job, or that tech companies will not use to manipulate you for profit.

I honestly can't help but think these weird ideas that pop up in American corporate culture are from some kind of fucked up Negative Zone or alternate reality. Because if I cannot imagine anyone suggesting this become a thing here without it causing masses of workplace violence.

There is that, but then a fair few ideas that now seem normal would have seemed absurd not that long ago. Throw enough weird ideas at the wall, maybe some will stick.

In the USA, capitalist bosses have everything stitched up. In most of the rest of the world, workers tend to have more power so it takes longer to wear them down into compliance. But we'll all get there eventually.

The people who run these companies don't really see individual people. A worker is little different from any other tool: ship it in, and if it breaks chuck it out and get a new one. Once you're not really thinking of people, it's easy to treat them like machines. Or if you're an Amazon boss or similar, you probably view humans as worse than machines, because machines do what they are told, whereas humans can choose to be disobedient and inefficient.
