So what is the difference between these two groups. I know they're quite similar, but what are some defining characteristics between them?

One has a real culture.

The other is a whiny ***** that wants to be a part of the former.

I don't really know how to put it, as I'm not from either group.

From my understanding, goths are an actual culture, while emos are just really sensitive (Pansy) goths.

Shit if I know exactly.

Goth is a type of culture an Emo's are just the whiny attention seeking knock-off.

I'll also offer pictoral comparisons.

one difference is, a goth would take being confused as an emo as an insult wheras visa versa the emo would be pleased, though to be fair, emo isnt just the angst that it is now, it had better roots.

i get called a goth ive always been ok with that, my friends and i joke about it they make sisters of mercy jokes at my expense and i call them muso's who cant settle down unless the music is like 5000bpm in 9 16 timing or some shit.

i think for a lot of people its mealy a convenient way of saying i wear these things because i do,

we cannot mock emo because it lacks a culture as i believe it does have as valid a back story as most other musical styles, i think my main problem with emo is it completely removed the pretence that we could listen to music focused on righting wrongs and serving a bigger point than ourselves.
the day i found out rage against the machine were signed to sony the music died a little, when i couldnt go to a rock club without hearing green day and emo, thats when the music disconnected life support and threw itself out of the fucking hospital window.

Well from what I know the Goths were a tribe of Germanic people that deceded on the Roman Empire during the 3rd century... Oh, you mean like modern Goths.

Well from what I know the Gothic subculture seems to be a bit more established than the "Emo" sub-culture. Emo's to me just seem like they're trying to be dark because they got a bit too much teen angst. Goths on the other hand seem legitamitly cynical and dark.

That's my opinion though. Since I couldn't really be considered to be part of either group, this is just from what observations I've made of both groups.

Here is a bad generalisation of the difference :p

Insult a goth and an emo; the emo will cut themself, the goth will cut you.

It's the difference between Twilight and Dracula. That's really the best way I can put it.

More seriously though.
"there?s the difference that they have in culture influences and expression. Emos express themselves in poetry such as Allen Ginsberg?s ?Howl?. They also make critiques based on post-punk and punk philosophy. Goth, on the other hand, has a sub-culture related to black magic, vampires, witchcraft, and their way of thinking veers more towards the nature of death, fiction and fantasy."

That is the most distictive difference in my opinion :)

The people in the Gothic genre are more refined, and are actually quite intelligent. They have common sense and are actually easier to get to know. They are fascinated by the idea of death, but can respect that their time will come and they do not rush it. While Emos are more whiny, usually push other people away, and will cut themselves because they want to die. With the lack of common sense (hence the cutting), they sometimes will just commit suicide, or while cutting will cut to deep.

Oh yes, and Goths contribute more to society than a whiny brat.

To me, it's more a case of Gothic is more grand and aimed towards extravagance and elegance. Emo is more based towards minimalistic dark clothing.

A Goth for instance would wear a sweeping, flowing dress with a corset and long dark hair... an emo would wear jeans and a studded belt, with a black t-shirt and short hair.

This is pretty much my interpretation too.
