By the way good job with that Gundam clip, perfect example :)
I love that clip, it's one of the few times I've actually felt something from watching an anime.
Try grave of the fireflies (sad), or haibane renmei (happy/sad), and if your've gone through a ton of emotional hardships evangellion is apparently for you (listening to fans, personally it wasnt for me)
I've got Grave of Fireflies on dvd, when I reached the ending I was like wth? =( I'm going to go be depressed in a corner somewhere now.

I've heard about the other two, mostly about Evangelion, but I haven't got around to them yet.

I recommend Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora [http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6300], it's a beautiful story.

I cried several times throughout MGS 4. Despite the fact that some of the plot points were patently absurd, they were done beautifully, and you could really connect with the characters.
Yes indeed. Possibly the most emotive scene in the game (and the saddest thing I've ever watched) is this: MGS4 Spoilers http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MKFctUN_L5E

The only game that's ever really upset me was Lufia 2, which is impressive because anyone who has played Lufia 1 for more than 20 minutes knows exactly what is going to happen to these characters. It's like a impending train wreck you can't look away from...

That's a bit cold isn't it?
Well, if that was a real person, it'd be pretty rude, but I'm being honest.
What scenes do you find emotive then?
I don't remember it very well, but it was a scene in a movie my uncle made (he's an animator) where a soldier is gunning down a large crowd of innocent civilians. The thing is, the suit of armor he is wearing projects an unchanging, grim look about him, while inside the suit, he is actually disgusted by killing those people and is breathing heaviliy, and experiances a lot of guilt afterwards. It also had this song [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Npe1jTb1tpk] in the background. It didn't exactly make me cry, but it was still a very emotional scene.

before anyone else says it, Jenny from the Darkness.I was suprised the game didn't make us fight up to her execution scene.instead,it puts the guns aside for a minute to show WHY jenny was so great, why she needed to be protected. It really made me mad at the Darkness, for not letting Jackie help her, when he was so close.
Especially if you do what it takes the get the "Real Men Stays Around" achievement. She even bought you cake! What a sweetie.

The underlying sentiment of love lost, love found and love abandoned throughout the whole of Braid, while not an emotive scene, really tugged at my heartstrings. It was all eerily familiar.

first off, a scene has to be realistic. making random people cry with the main character can be rather flow breaking.

second, music doesnt usually help, unless its really subtle. loud sad music distracts from the issue.

third, having rain or other weather effects and stuff is also distracting, and its pretty cliched to boot. the lesson i guess is to remain focused.

last, and most important, if a character isnt believable then it ruins the whole thing. developers should try to imagine how they would react in the situation.

I have yet to see a game that made me sad. I tend to lean toward anger considering that most of the things that the bad guy did to make the sad part are all on my Things that Piss Me the Hell Off list. So instead of sad I'm contemplating how to kill the responsible party in a way that screams FUCK YOU!

Yeah, same for me. I was thinking "let's see where this goes" and all of a sudden an achievement popped up.

hrmm... The first (and only) time I was surprised by the "Mentor turns evil" was in Jade Empire. I remember watching my screen and thinking "NO! WHY!? WHY DID YOU DO THAT MASTER LI!? NOOO!! YOU WERE LIKE A FATHER TO ME!"
Thanks, I haven't played that game yet. I should've known better than to come in here though. :D

I forget the name of this one game...but you're playing as this Native American guy on an alien spaceship, and his girlfriend's body was surgically attached to this giant monster dog thing you have to kill and killing the dog kills your girlfriend. That was a pretty heart-rending moment for me.

That's Prey, and I hardly think it counts as an emotional scene. That game had all the depth of a teaspoon of coffee sludge.

Given that I'm in this gray area where a shallow game doesn't really kill the experience and a game with too much depth would be crushing my perception, I think it should still count.

Besides. It's the only emotional scene I can recall out of the massive library of FPS games I've played so far.

I guess that makes sense; I agree that Prey was a pretty decent game. (I'll probably never play it again, but it was worth one play-through, considering that I got it for Christmas and it was therefore free.) I also agree that emotional scenes in FPS games are pretty few and far between. Once again, I'll direct someone to the Half-Life franchise - especially Episode Two - as the top of the pack.

Well when Aeris died...just kidding. The bit in KOTOR when you could get Zalbaar to kill Mission (the Wookie with a life debt to you kills his best friend), not emotional as in sad but more, damn I'm really sick.

Spoiler For Half Life 2 episode 2

When Eli Vance gets killed I literally shouted 'NOOO' at my screen. That was really well done.
I don't know that part in HL2 made me more vengeful than sad
Made me annoyed that EP3 isn't out... I wanna know what happens!!

I've heard rumors that they might - keyword might - release a trailer by the end of the year.

EDIT: whoops
