I recently visited a website called Encyclopaedia Dramatica. Probably most, if not all of you are familiar with it.

I was not. I was really surprised and depressed by the amount of bigotry and racism that was present on that website. I was especially depressed by some of the articles concerning Asians/Orientals. It seemed to me, that whoever wrote that had an image of Asians/Orientals as being a bunch of impotent retarded f*ck pigs.

Now I do realise that places like that are a breeding ground for trolls and flamers (not meant as "homosexual"). However, I want to ask you whether such attitude is prevalent in Western society. I have once lived in Russia (12 years), so I am not completely unfamiliar with it. But, since I left when I was in grade 6, it is possible that I missed/skipped most of the racism and supremacist attitudes.

If it wasn't already incredibly obvious from the first line, no. The attitude towards racism on sites like that is as far removed from the majority of Western society's as George Bush was from not sticking his foot in his mouth when it came to speeches.

You have it backwards. Such a place is not a breeding ground for trolls and 'flamers', it is a place for those people to go hang out together.

The site is intended as a joke. Very few people actually hold those opinions. In fact, I'd guess that almost none of the ED contributors even hold those opinions. They use racism, nasty porn, all that other stuff for shock value. They're very similar to a lot of stand-up comedians, or the teen gross-out (like the American Pie franchise) comedies that came out in the 90's, except they take it way further.

They don't mean it. They're just immature people, and they've been corrupted by the internet. It happens.

I personally love the site, and I am not a racist in any way. My best mate is african, I have a heap of asian mates, and I even have a few female friends. We all think the site is hilarious... and none of us take it seriously at all. Anyone who takes it seriously, shouldn't visit it.

I love the Offended page. It's hilarious. Sick and twisted, yes, but still bloody hilarious. Informative too. Some of those things I wasn't even aware the body could do.
