It's been in the news recently that the world will end in like 7 or 8 days due to the Large Hadron Collidor which smashes atoms ( i think ) together at incredible speeds and will recreate the big bang. Its rumored that this could cause black holes to appear and destroy the planet. I really don't know what to think.. I would like to know what all you folk think about it all, to be quite honest I really don't care but I'm interested in your views.

I heard about this, but the world only ends if it goes wrong, and who heard of scientists (especially Government ones) getting something wrong. So we should be pretty darn safe I think.

I certainly hope the world won't end, but there's not much I can do about it if it does.

The world isn't going to end, the chances of that happening are so small you have a better chance of your hand phasing through the table. (which can happen, by the way, just very unlikely)

If it is the end, can you think of a cooler end of the world than a manmade black hole? It won't, I will bet money on it.

I've always read that as Large Hard On Collider, which not only makes me snicker like an immature little kid, but defeats the fact that it's a really progressive piece of scientific study in my mind.

well, i normally wouldn't care about the end of the world, but if it is going to happen in 2012 then I'm gonna be pissed, that's the year i graduate. I won't even have a year of complete laziness

I say, take it easy for the next week, it might be the last, and if it isn't, then you had a good vacation then didn't you?

Hey, if they really thought it was gonna end the world, would they do it?

...

Crap, these are scientists. They do anything just to see what happens. Duck and cover, everyone.

Yes, the Large Hadron Collider does have a chance of creating a black hole and destroying the earth.

Yes, these guys are scientists, so they'll attempt it anyway.

No, the chance is not high enough to merit any real concern. You'd have a better chance of winning the lottery several thousand times in a row.

"and I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, and I looked and behold, a pale horse and the haine which sat upon him was Death. And Hell followed with him."

Ok no I don't believe we're all gonna die. Personally, I don't believe in an "end-of-the-world" anyway.

they said the same thing in the 40's when they detonated the first nuke. they thought it was going to set the atmosphere on fire and incinerate us all! anyway theres like a 0.978% chance that this causes the end of the world, in the article i was reading it said the LHC has a better chance of finding God then ending the world

If this happens, I lose quite a few bets. Duke Nukem Forever, Starcraft 2, and Starcraft: Ghost will never be released; which is a bet some friends and I have. However, Spore will have been released, so I'll win one.

What about when the Sun explodes and incinerates it?

I have to ask, what technological benefits could come from a successful experiment with the collider? Is it even worth the risk at all?

Especially considering the fact that there is actually no "wrong" in science, since even an unsuccessful experiment would yield some results ^^

A friend of mine is studying Physics. He told me they would primarily smash Baryons onto each other (Alpha particles mainly, Nuclei). That's quite a mass, but if I understood the theory of gravity correctly, there might really be black holes (or actually micro-singularities) for some time, but as long as the vacuum inside the collider is maintained, they should be quite harmless, as they MIGHT have the density of a black hole, and even an event horizon, but because of their small mass a quite weak gravitational field.
Some years ago scientists discovered energy streaming out of black holes they observed. If this is true, these micro-singularities should dissolve into Gamma Radiation before they can do any harm.

If they are stable though... Well, as joswle pointed out, there are a lot less exciting possible apocalypses than a black hole ^^
