Ok, so i already know i'm an idiot, but it's done, so shh :p

I have tried using the task manager to restart explorer, and a process called "explorer.exe" reappears, but no taskbar or clock, or start menu or anything like that reappears. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

For reference;

I have restarted my computer since ending the process. So this may be a factor.
I'm running windows vista
I moved my taskbar/startmenu/etc to the left of the screen rather than running along the bottom, no idea if this would make a difference

Thanks for any help in advance.

You can manually start explorer.exe from the task manager by using new task -> explorer.exe that should start it. If the problem persists you will need to
Start -> type in Search box -> Regedit find at top -> Right Click on -> RUN AS ADMIN

Navigate to this key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In RIGHT PANE double click SHELL - Value Data and the entry should only be explorer.exe. Anything else is probably a virus, google it to make sure.

make sure in the line Shell data reads Explorer.exe, if not add it

Edit: You could try resetting the taskbar to default position.

To reset your taskbar to the default position, restart your computer in Safe mode. To start your computer in Safe mode, restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu. The taskbar will reset to the default position after you reboot your computer.
