The only remaining oral antibiotic used for gonorrhea failed to cure the infection in nearly 7 percent of patients treated at a clinic in Toronto, Canadian researchers said on Monday in the first published study of treatment-resistant gonorrhea in North America.

The study raised alarm among U.S. health officials, who have ordered doctors to stop prescribing the antibiotic known as cefixime because lab cultures showed gonorrhea was starting to develop resistance to the drug.

That left U.S. doctors with only one effective treatment for most cases of gonorrhea, an injectible antibiotic known as ceftriaxone.

So, Canada and the USA have started to get Gonorrhea that resists all forms of treatment except for Ceftriaxone, but it's only a matter of time before it becomes resistant to that, too, considering that it's already happened in Japan [http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/17/1/10-0397_article.htm].

But of course, nobody is going to change their habits in response to this, so I'm sure that we'll be looking forward to a wonderful spread of the disease, considering that there may be 600,000~ new carriers each year in N. America.

We really need to fund research into a whole new generation of antibiotics that have a biochemical target that cannot be easily changed by the organism. Or just new antibiotics in general...otherwise we face running out of any treatment options for the majority of diseases in our lifetime.

that's an antivirus/immunization not an antibiotic. antivirii can be cultured relatively easily from existing virii while new effective antibiotics are getting harder and harder to create

No, no it is not...
Flu shots are antibodies or a dead/weakened version of the virus to train your own immune system on how to deal with the specific strain's surface and prepare proper antibodies. Antibiotics are chemicals that interfer with the bacterias directly, blocking some key element in their metabolism or stopping them dividing.
Building up immune resistance is easy, just kill a virus and inject it for the immune system to go wild on it. A new antibiotic is considerably harder because it is a medication and thusly requires meticulous testing and studies over years before it is safe and legal for human use. And in the last two decades or so we have not exactly overworked ourselves with antibiotic research so if N. gonorrhoeae were to become resistant to all current treatments in the next time we could very well have an unstoppable disease on our hands for quite some time.

You're trying to make this simpler than it actually is. And I didn't even go into the difference of virus and bacteria because neither medicine nor your body are treating those two the same way.

Thank god for a long term committed relationship. As far as how does it make me feel, it serves people right for misusing anti-biotics. Most medical clinics will prescribe anti-biotics for anything and everything without regard to the fact that overuse and misuse causes stuff like MRSA to come about.

I'm probably a bad person for saying but I did snicker a little at the irony of having a country with a reputation for not believing in evolution facing a virus which has evolved to resist most medicine.

As for the rest, well I wouldn't have sex without a condom anyway so I consider myself quite safe. Especially since I don't have much sex, none at all to be precise. Guess there's a bright side to everything xD.

Problem is that antibiotics put enormous selective pressure on bacteria to develop resistance, and developing novel traits under extreme stress and then multiplying rapidly is the reason bacteria have been successful for billions of years.

Case in point: If you're treatment is 99.9999999% effective at killing bacteria, if that 0.00000001% develops a hard resistance, then it will quickly multiply since it has no competition from other bacteria, until 100% of the surviving bacteria are now resistant.

This is always why its a very serious problem that we're over prescribing antibiotics.
