Most games tend to lack historical depth. In that I mean they lack a true flowing history, with realistic responses to catastrophe. Here is a brief history of humanity up to the point where the "game" would take place, and I am curious on to your thoughts of whether or not it is an original approach.
The Plague: A plague surfaced 200 years prior, which causes a parasite to reside in the human body. It is attracted to the electrical current of the Human Nervous System and typically stays near that. The only time it moves away if for reproduction which ti does in the Human lungs, due to its need for an oxygen rich environment. The Parasite itself does not support the body until the body is actually dead. The more of the parasite, the faster it reanimates.
The History: The Plague initially took 4+ hours to reanimate a body, during this time rigor mortis had already set-in and these were mopped up fairly easily. Some decades later, the Parasite evolved to reanimate before the muscles stiffened. These "Zombies" as they were nicknamed, were really just scared people who had severe brain damage, they wandered and looked for familiar settings. Jumping to 50 years before the current date, the Parasite makes another leap in its evolution, where it now reanimates in around 30 minutes. brain damage still occurs, but on a far smaller degree. The Parasite also aids in the "running" of the body while it is active, and while it won't repair muscles, it still keeps the body alive (to seek medical attention). A discovery is made that exposing humans with this parasite (by this time all humans are infected) to oxygen rich environments (far higher than in the standard atmosphere), the parasite reproduces exponentially and allows for reanimation to occur in 30-45 seconds.
Now people can live to seak medical attention assume they haven't been shot in the head, and assuming they are in an environment that has an oxygen level of close to or exceeding that of the Earth Atmosphere, they can survive despite bodily injury.
Enter the "Zombie" Space Marines. Now that humanity is immortal, they die, and can get back up to continue fighting. This is not a trait of the Space Marines themselves, but the Human genetic structure which allows for this parasite to exist.
The questions I would like to ask is this.
1. Do you feel this premise is unique?
2. Do you feel this premise may be fun to play (in any genre, (RTS, FPS, RPG, etc. etc.)
3. If you could change one thing about this, to make it playable, what would ti be?
Everything from here on out isn't necessary, but exists to add some intrigue to the universe.
Immortals and Living Dead.
Immortals are Humans who managed to survive the duration of the plague without dying. They are your standard Human, all in tact.
The Living Dead (LDs) call themselves this because they can trace their ancestry back to someone who died, and reproduced after their first death. This mix of damage, parasite, and environment aided in an evolutionary offshoot that had rather odd sensory issues. LDs are not sight-based as standard Humans are, instead they use Smell, Feel, and Taste primarily, and use hearing and sight as a secondary. While their eyes and ears are intact and functional, the Occipital Lobe, and Temporal lobes developed differently than the standard Human. They have trouble with verbal communication and can use sign-language to communicate (even over distances). They cannot however distinguish friend from foe over distances, without extensive time with that individual. The LDs however have a greater grasp of their own physiology, and can make far more fine and controlled muscle movements than a standard Human can.
The Immortals and LDs have the same IQ, but use different methods of communicating, often leading both groups feeling the other is less intelligent. The millitary structure has changed slightly, in that every LD and Immortal are paired. This partnership exists due to the different specialties of each, and how combat environments can change suddenly. LDs often use the Immortals for firing directions (suppressive fire), and Immortals often use LDs as close combat support (in the event the enemy decides to close).
So, The final question (for those of you who have read this far).
Does this change your perception of Zombies and Space Marines? by combining the two in this way, does it make it a unique specimen in and of itself? or is it simply a Frankenstein baby of the two?
I didn't actually do any research on how the body functions for this, I basically just used prior knowledge from all those High-School classes you took so long ago. So if anything seems to be incorrect regarding physiology, I apologize.
Edit: I apologize for this. But this entire topic is in response to all the "This game is basically X + y with a sprinkle of Z". More or less in response to the idea that no one is original with their ideas, and that is why I am asking these questions.
