Erasing ourselves from history.

We are writing ourselves out of history. In a push to be the most amazing, the most informed, the most far reaching of societies in the history of the earth we have put ourselves on digital devices that are only readable by those that hold the exact technology to open fake documents made up of 1s and 0s.

Thousands of years from now a giant pock-mark on history will be void of information and summed up by ageless plastic scattered under massive natural disasters the earth could have moved on from if the entire world wasn't paved in a solid layer of concrete.

Books and tablets are readable for centuries, digital documents are as good as gone in the first massive electrical war that is looming in our near future.

We try to be important, and instead we're erasing ourselves from the very fabric of time itself.

We've even taken the mediums that taught us about past society (art, photos, etc.) and digitized them... we really are writing ourselves out of existence. Our legacy is proprietary information...

But I suppose I don't really care. by the time something bad happens on Terra, I'm hoping we will have moved some of our species somewhere else. So if need be, we can always come back to pick up the pieces.

Yes we are digitizing everything, but they are copies, so in case the original gets destroyed, we can make another. Also if something happens to Earth, hopefully by then we will have humans living off-world, or passed on our information to another sentient species.

If every piece of digital software was destroyed, the likely hood that we would re-create all this software in exactly the same way is minimal.

Durp read my topic. So EVERY DIGITAL device is destroyed. Meaning all these backups are also destroyed. Everything we've put on the internet and on the computers aren't written on parchment and books like our ancestors. HURP

The issue here isn't that we are erasing ourselves is that quite posssibly we are just speeding up the process. Given any extended length of unoccupied (and in some cases occupied) time all reminents of any kind of a civilization that we have will be eroded and destroyed. Not just books and photos but buildings and structures that probably mark us more than anything else does. Its not so much our responsibility to stop this process as it is to work with what is conveinent for us. Yes, I suppose we could use more concrete and physical manifestations to represent our civilization as opposed to the purely digital information we have now but how far would that put us back in Technology. You certainly didn't blow my mind but you did have a very well thought out post that will at least make some people think.

You can open a chess set from 600 years ago and play it.
You can pick up dice and roll them.

In 50 years, will I still be able to play my Dreamcast?
Will TVs still have the ports I need to hook it up? Will power be delivered the same way?

If mankind died tomorrow we would not vanish from history, if aliens came to our world they might be unable to read our writing or use our disks, but they would know that we exsisted.

Of course much of our history would be lost, but thats more about us being dead than the mediun by which we store data. Hell, if aliens went to the moon they would know we exsisted.

But it's all a moot point if we're all dead. The odds of life finding us is slim to none.
