Texas’ main power grid struggled to keep up with the demand for electricity Monday, prompting the operator to ask Texans to conserve power until Friday.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas said in a statement Monday that a significant number of unexpected power plant outages combined with expected record use of electricity due to hot weather has resulted in tight grid conditions. Approximately 12,000 megawatts of generation were offline Monday, or enough to power 2.4 million homes on a hot summer day.

ERCOT officials said the power plant outages were unexpected — and could not provide details as to what could be causing them.
Here we go again...

Yeah, this is fucking stupid. ERCOT and its “We’re Texas; we don’t need nobody” bullshit got exposed in February, now they want to act like the Texas heat it was supposedly designed to handle is something new and might be too much? Have you been in Texas, ERCOT? A couple summers ago, we had a record streak of +100-degree days, and you didn’t flinch, but you took our outrageous electricity bill money without batting an eyelash. As a Texas resident of the past 11 years, I promise you, I’m not changing a damn thing I’ve done to stay cool all these years, least of all listening to ERCOT. If the heat is my problem, ERCOT, then it’s YOUR problem. I pay my fucking electricity bill, on time, every single month and you guys take the money readily; if you’re not doing your job with it, that’s NOT my problem.

I say all of Texas should set their A/C to 30-degrees and watch ERCOT crumble so we can get on the national grid and gain the ostensible reliability and support that comes with it like everywhere else.

TL;DR? FUCK ERCOT.

How likely is it that power goes out?
Not very, I'd wager. After all, their grid was designed to handle Texas' notorious heat, and as far as I can recall during my stint here, we've never had outages [to the extent as we experienced in February] due to exceptional use during the summer. I think they're just covering their asses and shifting the onus from the debacle in February when they got exposed, i.e.: "just in case shit goes down again, we were responsible this time and warned everyone..."

Perhaps they're still recouping from the stress the grid went through in February and might be concerned this latest stress might cause issues, but whatever. We pay our bills for them to do their job; if we see yet again they can't hack it, we need to move on from them. I have a pool; I can stay cool while they juggle their responsibilities and the nation looks on in shame as they put millions of people in yet another fucked up situation.

I wonder if the people who ran California's power grid into the ground are among those who moved to Texas in recent years.

California's electric issues are due to entirely different causes than Texas's electric issues. Though, I guess you could technically trace both back to unchecked greed by already wealthy people.

Or perhaps they realized after there were zero consequences of note from state or federal authorities after that massive wintry fuckup, they have carte blanche to fuck over lower-class Texans, primarily black and brown ones.

Yet people are continuing to move to Texas. If you do you are putting yourself, and possibly someone's life in danger.

If you want a low tax state to move to, move to Colorado..

Again, how likely is it that power goes out? I'm pretty worried about this ERCOT thing.

This article says that ERCOT says that it's "unlikely" that they'll need to implement outages, but what ERCOT says, and what happens are two very different things.

So... to fix the problem, you need to put a border wall all the way around texas to stop those illegal aliens from taking all the electricity

After the Bay area hypercapitalist tech douchebags complete their mass migration to Austin, please and thank you.

We may also need anti-air surrounding the Texas airspace, but I'm absolutely fine with that.

We hold a lottery for the privilege of controlling the SAM's and flak guns, which should more than adequately cover the price of ammunition. Additional overhead and associated costs could be covered via PPV livestream. I mean it's a scalable concept, since we could use excess funding generated to install artillery at the border and charge a fee to open fire into the state. It's fuckin' Texas, what are they gonna do, whine about the free exercise of Second Amendment freedom?
