Escapist Adverts...

Alright, I'm probably going to get some hate for this. But I'm getting pretty sick of Dwayne Johnson harassing me every time I sit down to watch a video. I know that the Escapist are pushing the Publisher's Club, etc. etc., but I don't want any of that. I just want to watch my favourite videos. It's all I do. I tend not to read the forums that much, or the reviews or much else. I don't really have time for it all. But a 5 minute video review of game or film or whatever fits into my life quite nicely. Now I don't mind adverts since I am not paying for the service, but even different adverts each time would be preferable. Thing is, I can now quote that damned Faster advert verbatim. Is anyone else getting really sick of it? Because in all honesty, rather than pushing me to buy the premium service, it's annoying me that much I may just stop visiting the Escapist.

P.S. Apologies if I should have posted this somewhere else, or if it is a duplicate, but like I said, I never really post on forums.

The ads are there as a way for the website to make money in order to function. Its not free and is costing money to host the awesome videos that they put up. It might seem like an irritation to you, but they are not there because they want them to be there. They are there cause they HAVE to be there.

Thank you. Look, I've been watching the videos on here for years. Like I said, I never really get involved with much else. And I'm not wishing to be negative. I'm going to reiterate, but I agree with the fact I should have advertising forced towards me. I don't pay for the service. They have to make money. But it has been getting more and more pushy recently. And I don't understand why I am having to watch the SAME advert. I don't wish to circumvent 'The Escapist's advertisements, security mechanisms, media protections', I'm just asking for a little variety in the advertising I'm forced to watch, that's all.

You get adverts BEFORE videos? Thar is mega odd. I only get the Pub club advertisement after I finish which of course is fine, since I just take off my headphones and dive into the comments while it loads.

Maybe it's a localization thing. Sometimes it just ROCKS to not be in America (or the West in general)

to be honest, i think we should be grateful for what we're getting for free. Quality on the level of ZP, Extra Credits, Movie Bob, LRR and the like for free, FREE, that's fucking awesome.

And OP, at the risk of sounding like a troll, if you are getting so mad that you may stop coming to the escapist just becasue of a couple of ten second adverts at the end of a video then it would seem to me that you aren't sufficently invested in this website to bother staying anyways.

Besides, at least it isn't as bad as YouTube.

I don't mind the ads. It sucks that they're at the beginning of every 3 minute video if you're trying to watch a series from the beginning, but even then the actual commercial to video ratio is still better than cable tv. None of the ads are for stuff I'm interested in but whatever. It's totally a necessary evil when you consider the other option is worse content or a subscription fee which most of us would be unwilling to pay, no matter how minute.

Zero Punctuation alone is worth sitting through a bunch of ads and, if I remember right, it doesn't usually make you sit through one.

The thing that is annoying me about the adverts is that they cut in sometime halfway through the video if I pause it and then I half to start from the beginning again.

I would think you'd be all over YouTube. For the amount of advertising, YouTube provides a MUCH higher level of quality than The Escapist. So YouTube has tons of crappy videos. It also has tons of really excellent ones, often paid for by those ads you love. For the amount of ads on the website, The Escapist doesn't offer anywhere near the level of (FREE) entertainment that YouTube does.

In addition, every member of YouTube actually is a contributor. Unlike the "pub club" here, where members are NOT publishers of content, everyone on YouTube can create. There are downsides, sure, but a lot of the people who are here on The Escapist today came from YouTube, and without YT they never would have had their shot to be recruited.

Also, I personally think many of the examples of WOW YOU GET THIS FOR FREE you listed are little better than "average" or below-average entertainment. Lest anyone think I am trolling the site's content, I will be happy to render constructive criticism for these people upon request, I just don't want to write another 4+ paragraphs if I don't have to.

It seems to me like the OP is just offering constructive criticism on how the ads can be reworked so they aren't so annoying. DEstructive criticism would be telling The Escapist to take all the ads down and that the site is crap. He is not saying that.

if I remember a similar thread was started a while ago and the poster got kicked/banned/suspended, you should watch out with posting criticism on the site.
If you where bothered with side adds (like the rift adds) you could un-install Flash Player, but since this is about the vids that won,t work.

Hmmm i don't have any adds (must be a regional thing...AdBlock on/off doesn't make a difference).
But adds before videos don't bother me...i either skip them (if possible) or just tune down the volume and do something else while it runs

That's how I feel about it. I wish they could have a variety of them though. I prefer if I could one of 2 or 3 different ads instead of a single ad for just one game or product on every single video. As long as it keeps the site free, I'm fine with an ad.

Honestly, I don't mind the ads.
It's little hassle, even for the ~10 series I watch.
You could just stop watching, or you could join the Pub Club.

Fair enough, didn't read into it too much.
Though, you might have the same problem if you watch videos here as frequently as i do.
Really, thats about as much as i can reply to, as little as it is.
Since ads have never been my problem, so I dont know much about their details.

I made a thread about this but no one posted. The problem I'm having is that it's displaying the same 20-second film trailer prior to every video. I'm all FOR ads generating revenue for sites but when you try to have a day of watching Zero Punctuation and it's obstructed by the same advert on every single video, that's not on, especially when before it's only shown an ad once every ten or twelve videos. THAT is an acceptable rate.

Oddly though, I asked my mate up the country to check if he was getting it, and he's only got one ad interrupt over the course of eight videos. Why would it happen solely to me? Anyone?
