Espionage games have to be one of my favroute genre of games and one that I've found has great playabilty allthough now I'm at a loss. I've found that latly there is a gap in the market and im realy stuck to find new games. I've played through the metal gear series and I love Splinter Cell. Latly I bought Alpha Protocall and needless to say, I was disiponted. Does anyone know of any other games I could give a try? I could do with somthing new.

Are there any games about real espionage? You know, a dull little job where you occasionally photocopy some paper and send it home? It always seems to be the overblown stuff about guns and hookers and the like ;-)

That said, if you're after stealth games the Hitman series is fantastic. You're not actually a spy, but you're still way sneakier than any of those James Bond wannabes.

I loved the Hitman games. I remember when I played the first one and loved it. Took so much skill to progress. I found the newer ones where a little to easy at times but still an an amazing series to play none the less.

I thought Blood Money was the best, because it was just so open-ended. You could go in blazing with an AK47, or do one tiny thing that was so subtle you could be halfway to China before the target died. If you played really well, nobody would ever even know that you had been there. I loved the little newspaper articles you got for completing a level perfectly, in which the assassinations you've carried out are reported as nothing more than tragic accidents.

On the other hand, I also love switching to first-person with a pair of silenced Silverballers and shooting every single fucker on the level in the face :-D

..You guys make it sound like being spotted, in disguise, during a snowstorm, from 300 yards away isn't normal...

Well then what the hell was wrong with my game? :\

I havn't played much of the theif games if I'm honest. I remember playing the first on one the Xbox and I enjoyed it thoughly. One thing I did find is that I found it a bit like Dues Ex 2 the way it ran and how things where set out. That isn't a bad thing though. I loved Dues Ex and I spent hours on that game. I still havn't got around to completing it XD.

I did like that option of the game and I've found alot of games are doing that nowerdays. They give you the option to do things both ways allowing you to choose how you play. Adds a good sense of replay value. More games should do this me thinks

You played 3 on the Xbox ;)

1 and 2 are on PC. Which I have not played 1 and 2 (can't find them) but I heard 3 is much different. However I hear 2 is the best

Ahh wait, I remember played 2 many moons ago. Your right about the differances in gameplay allthough they still are both amazing. If I remmber correctly (don't quote me on this) In 3 you again had the choice between stelth. The way it was set out and the way you done misssons was differnt aswell.

I think it went deeper than that. A lot of games offer two or three options, but those options are often simply choosing a path and walking it, or a moral decision on whether or not to perform an action. What Blood Money did so well was to give the player an entire range of options - you were never constricted to 'shoot everyone' vs 'stealth & cunning', there were a great many ways to perform either or combine them. You could shoot one guy, drag his body away, wear his clothes and sneak in, but then you'd have a choice as to what to do. Catch the target alone and shoot him, poison his food, arrange for a chandelier to drop on his head or climb through his bedroom window and bash his brains out with a mallet. It never felt that the game was railroading you into anything based on a previous choice. So long as you didn't go crazy and pull out an assault rifle, virtually anything could follow on from anything else.

I have only played Hitman 2 but I agree on the sheer open end fun of things. The only problem I found with the game was that the guards in some levels were just a little too quick to pick up on a problem. So if for example you were walking through a level and didn't take the exact path required not to be noticed (in some cases this could be as much as a few steps out) a whole swarm of guards would bear down on you ruining that perfect rating. Was that cleared up for the later games?

I enjoyed it a lot but those small niggles kept it away from perfection as a game. That and the snow levels, where its impossible to get a silent assassin rating, even if you do climb in the truck right from the off.

You can try Death to Spies 1 and 2 and Hitman

Death to Spies is the hardest game I've ever played. You just can't afford to be suspicious. It's brutal.

I've never played the Thief games, so they are omitted form this next statement: Hitman Blood Money is by far the best open-ended, sandbox style, 'espionage' game out there. I just wish they'd hurry the hell up with Hitman 5.
