Ok, I've just ordered it. But now I look into the reviews, people say that it's a good game but not that scary. Is this true? I was really hoping for it to be a good, scary game. But is it? Out of ten, how scary would you rate it?

It is not the kind of scary most games are these days. The whole JUMP OUT OF CLOSET IN YOUR FACE scary.
It is more a psychologically scary game. You might question your sanity eventually. I really love this game, though I have yet to beat it. I think a game I had been waiting for a while came out while I was playing this, thus I quit playing it. I really should beat it someday.

And yeah, it can be very confusing.

I found it really immersive when i played it. I was quite young at the time so i may have found it a lot more scary than it actually was probably, but i have some good memories from that game....

Keep your sanity meter low but not completely empty for best results.

I liked the game a lot, but I didn't actually find it scary. I guess I should explain myself before everyone starts flinging flames at me.

In order to activate the sanity effects, you had to lower a bar by being in the presence of creatures. That's fine. The problem is that you can very easily bring that meter back up. By giving you the ability to heal it that easily, the fear factor is lost (for me, at least). Plus, I didn't find the sanity effects all that scary, more intrusive than anything. Except when your head falls off and starts quoting Hamlet, that freaked me out the first time.

yeah that's what i was going to say

keep the sanity low, cool and frustratingly awesome things happen when your sanity is low
