I went to GameSpot looking to buy Fatal Frame but didn't find it. I did, however, come across the game The Suffering. I knew very little about the game, just what I saw from some brief gameplay footage and that it was considered to be a scary game. It was only $7 so I can't claim buying it was much of a risk. Any even moderately expensive games I'll research carefully before buying. So, whether it was much of a risk or not have you ever bought a game on impulse?

Edit: Oh yeah, The Suffering turned out to be a great game.

Thats how I buy most of my games, and how I bought my PS3. I went into town looking for some cheap 360 games and I came back with a PS3 slim and 3 games.

When I went to Gamespot last, I ended up buying Fallout 3 for the PC on impulse because there was a lack of Dragon Age: ORigin's Cellector's Editions in the store. I also bought the first Golden Sun.

I get a lot of games on impulse.
Some good. (Guilty Gear XX A Core +)
Some ok. (Naruto: Ninja Destiny)
Some horrible. (Lunar: Dragon Song)

but i tend to research games before i buy, and its worth the time.

None really. I tend to know whether I'm going to buy a game or not months before its release date

Many of my games are the result of impulse buys. Unless it is a big-name title that I MUST have, then it is a little less impulsey. I have a habit of going a while without getting a game and then just buying an "indie" game or game that nobody has ever heard of. As you can guess, this often results in hits and misses.

I usually buy games I want/research first.

But if I have money to burn, I.e all the time, Then I'll buy a game on impulse.

Which is why I have 200 odd ps2 games.

Oh yes. Bloody Steam and it's damned cheap games.

Though most games I buy are pre-ordered months in advance.

I bought MGS4 on impulse actually, never played any of the previous metal gear games and had a gift card from a friend and rolled the dice with it. Needless to say I call that one a win.

Ugh. I did the same thing with Lunar Song...only game I returned on day of purchase.

Only other game I've impulsively bought was Draglade for the DS...decent game, but got repetitive after a while.

Tons of them when I was little, and recently, there was Lost Odyssey and Dragon Age.

Good picks, in my opinion.

HOWEVER!

What kind of RPG makes you Choose between EXP or items?
You couldn't even choose the target when you were in a fight!
