Ever Leave an on-Line Community?

I was thinking of my own experiences in on-line communities, and how we move on from one community to the next. Or not.

Basically, I was wondering if you have ever left an on-line community that you were a significant part of. Could be a gaming clan, or a community like The Escapist.

What happened? Why did you leave? What happened when you left, and did you ever lurk, re-join or make a new username and rejoin?

I'll dish first. I was heavily involved in a gaming community site for about 2 years. i was a clan leader in 2 of the clans, a mod, wrote for the front page... blah, blah blah... Very involved.

But either the site changed or I did. It became very conservative. Very... American Conservative. Very sexist. Or I just had an awakening and I couldn't deal with the drama and the hate. Anyway over a few months I was debating leaving, and I finally did.

What surprised me was the aftermath: the guy who runs the site abruptly changed the mod requirements and wrote a tirade on his blog. I may have been the trigger, but I am not thinking that this was all on me... I'm just not that big of a deal, you know? I got some very nice words on my blog post as well, sayingthat they enjoyed my stuff but could tell I was unhappy.

I lurked a little: mostly to make sure that my ladies in my clan knew where I was. I also checked back when I heard of a major upheaval in their recruiting policies... More because I am interested in how on-line communities work: how they create and promote their communities. How they keep their core happy while attracting new members...

But: never went back, never reposted.

What about you folks? I KNOW some people make a big stand "I'M LEAVING" and then are stunned when no one asks for them back. Or they come back a few months later (seen this happen often)

Anyone want to confess?
