So this came up hours ago

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-12-15/former-ghibli-staffers-studio-ponoc-unveils-mary-and-the-witch-flower-anime-film/.109925

Basically, two of the Studio Ghibli staffs left before it closure and fonded a new studio called Studio Ponoc and hired back the staffs from Ghibli and they just reveal their first animated film trailer.

While it is too soon to say but I will type/ say is that I'm glad that Studio Ghibli isn't comptely dead. Whie the trailer remind me of Howl Moving Castle and Kiki Delivery's Service but I will remain optimistic for this upcoming film.

I love the character design, hope we get an actual plot that doesn't devolve into an infantile tone or the cliche "war is bad" or "protect the environment".
From a couple of links I read, one of the Yonebayashi (one of the guys who left Ghibli) stated he wanted his next film to be the oppersit to "When Marnie was there"

I can guess (but probably wrong) that child parent are far more loving toward her and would never abandom her.

Hiromasa Yonebayashi isn't a very good writer and director. While I enjoyed Marnie, it didn't have the same magic as Miyazaki and Takahata's movies and also wasn't as impressively animated. I remember finding Arrietty a bit better, but Miyazaki co-wrote that. I hope they can find their way without following in his shadow.
Miyazaki isn't a very good writer though, and I think Arrietty sort of showed that. His scripts really seem like they need his direction.

I like Yonebayashi well enough. Arrietty showed some flatness here and there, but was definately one of the better non-Miyazaki movies from Ghibli. And When Marnie was There (while I absolutely dispised the story) had a very solid visual style.

This looks cool. I'm simply glad there's still people in Japan making animated movies NOT based on pre-existing TV shows.

Based on his former work, I would say this is unlikely. That's more of a Miyazaki thing then a ghibli thing.

I'd say he's decent. Some of his films are better then a few of miyazaki's early films, which could be a bit cliche.

So Ponyo's grown up then? Har har har.

This is good news... for now. While I'm just as disappointed about Ghibli closing as anybody, I think this might be better for the crew that's left. After all, the Ghibli label will always be associated with Miyazaki and Takahata first and foremost, and starting over with a new name is better than trying to break out from the shadow of Miyazaki's legacy. While I found Arrietty rather unremarkable, I enjoyed From up on Poppy Hill for what it was (for extra heresy: I actually liked it more than Only Yesterday), and I thought Marnie was a good "last" film for Ghibli that didn't market itself with either Miyazaki or Takahata. There's potential in the crew, I just hope they can refine themselves to fully bring it out before they end up doing adaptations of shitty manga.

I thought Arrietty was ok or at least better than The Borrower. I actually enjoyed and liked Up from Poppy Hill. Sure it was more "realistic" sort of setting which was good/ bad but hey the club house was the fantasy aspect of the film and I liked the characters. Marnine was lackluster but it did had good visual (shame about that girl life).
