So basically, in 2 years time I should be off to Kenya for a 4 week project there which will involve helping locals and other things like safari. But..for each of us it costs around £4,000 and we have to raise all that by ourselves. Bearing in mind that the people before us raised a total of $18,000 in 14 months and we have practically double that. Me and my friends have started thinking of stuff we could do, the only problem being that we have only had about 2 ideas. I thought I'd ask the Escapist because I'm pretty sure we can come up with some good stuff. The ideas can be silly but not too silly for example a sponsored streak around my town.

So then, Ideas?

Get sponsorship for either the Great North Run
[link]http://www.greatrun.org/Events/Event.aspx?id=1[/link]
or (if that's too energetic) the Coast to Coast trail
[link]http://www.sherpavan.com/trails/coast_to_coast.asp[/link]

I'd go for the Coast to Coast, as with nearly 200 miles any sponsorship is really gonna pay off, you can do it at your own pace, and you'll get to see some of the most spectacular scenery in England.

This sounds like an absolutely terrible idea.

I have great difficulty believing that you're going to be able to contribute £4,000 worth of labour in four weeks. I think you'd be a damn sight better off raising £4,000, donating it to a charity involved in that locale, and having them spend it on infrastructure.

Even if you yourself are a professional builder - and, since you're on the Escapist, I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're not - a massive chunk of that money is going towards airfares and accommodation.

They have builders in Kenya - ones who are almost certainly a hell of a lot better at it than you. If you want to go on safari, fine, but just say it. Don't turn this into some bullshit vacation where you just take pictures of yourself with some black people so that you can look all benevolent and caring. This is going to result in you making some really shitty houses, or wells, or statues of Cthulhu or whatever the hell you're making, and somebody else wasting their time teaching you rudimentary construction and then running around picking up the pieces.

You want to help? Noble, but this is the wrong way to do it.

First off, I never even said that we would be building and this thread was asking kindly for ideas about fund-raising ideas that we could use. So please, read what I was asking again and answer that instead.

No. If somebody presents what appears to be a patently stupid idea, and requests advice on a specific subsection of that idea, it is not unreasonable to point out some serious goddamn issues with it.

And that's true, you didn't. Go on, then. I'd love to hear what you're going to be contributing.

I'm going to go ahead and give some details that I didn't mention that may clear up some things. This visit will be with a company aswell as my school, in case you thought to check at this time I am only 15. And secondly, I am aware that the money will be going alot towards our airfares and as for the accomadation aswell as any materials we will need for the project, it will be close to our location as the company has already established camps in the locations. And I am now aware that we will indeed be building but not houses as you say. We will be there to build things, but only small things such as desks and tables, and yes, I want to go so I can do something to help instead of sitting at home doing nothing. Makes me sound novble and stupid but still. As for my motive, if you have a problem with me wanting to go out and meet a new people and help them with things that might benefit them then thats just fine. Also, I would like to ask that if youhave more to say, do it in messages because I don't want this thread to be full of people arguing.
