Explain to me the appeal of Metallica

Alright, after reading through another thread about "music you hate", I found that this site is not immune to metal purists, those who claim that the only real metal is Metallica and other "founding" bands. What I want to know is what makes Metallica so damn amazing to everyone?

I'm legitimately not trying to troll. Post videos, songs, anything that can convince me that they are not just as "mainstream" as all of the bands you guys vilify. Convince me that their songs don't all sound the same. Explain to me specifically why they enthrall you. And more importantly, explain to me what makes them better than everything found in the contemporary metal world.

I feel like the only person who just doesn't care for the band. I don't hate them, but I am alone when I say things like "they're not that great". So, if I truly am mistaken, please correct my tastes. I mean they have released some nine albums and each of them gets conflicting reviews from their monstrous fan base. Is it just their staying value that's made them popular?

There are personally one of my favourite bands. I just love nearlly every one of there songs. I'm really into fast metal and i love guitar solos. I even enjoy there softer stuff on there Load and Re-Load albums. But, you can't get someone to tell you why there good. It's your own opinion. If you don't like them, then you have no hope!

Well written lyrics, SUPER catchy riffs, and very talented guitarists. Humor me and watch this video until 1:30.

No.

Look, if you don't like a band then you don't like it. It's like me saying "explain the appeal of milk", all you can say back is "well...it's nice...y'know, I like it."
See, that's what a lot of people say when I ask them why it's better. But so many people just assert that it's better and untouchable and these are the people I'm mainly addressing.

Also, they've produced a ton of albums and I guarantee I haven't heard them all. I've heard that the newer albums suck, but I've heard that a lot of the older albums sound the same, so apparently it is easily possible to like some of the band and not like its other works.

Metallica has always been a mainstream metal band and anyone who says otherwise if fooling themselves. The great thing about the band is that they were among the first to make the metal sound popular. Listen to anything off of their first two albums if you want a good example of traditional thrash metal. It started small with a few band like Metallica and it quickly became popular and mainstream. The reason people say it's no mainstream is simply because metal itself has fallen out of the public eye. Obviously there are lots of metal enthusiasts here on the Escapist but when was the last time you heard metal on the radio? And whenever that was, it was probably either one of Metallica's new alternative style singles, or a new band like Disturbed.

All in all it's just opinion, but Metallica achieved some impressive things, they wrote some great songs and are just a good example of what metal used to be.

Old stuff, ...And Justice for All and prior is good. After that, other then S & M they can suck it. I did like Jason Newstead as a bassist, and felt he never got the recognition he deserved. They certainly did influence a lot of other bands that have made some incredible music. The best thing about them is that they were able to get people into metal. They were a gateway band.

While I may not buy their albums, I will cheerfully admit they put on one of the best live shows I have ever seen. Sound quality is great, fans are going nuts and the whole show is massive, loud and awesome. Hell, they had a guy burn to death on stage as everything fell down around them (stunts) and they played their encore amidst the wreckage on their practice amps.

One hell of a show...

Also, I heard they opened for Guns & Roses in Europe somewhere and rocked so hard the fans were yelling at G & R to leave the stage and bring back Metallica. G & R ended up walking off!

They were a great band in their heyday.
Not the best, but they made quite four very solid albums and a couple of other decent ones.
I don't care for much of their stuff past Ride the Lightning though.

About a week ago, and no, it wasn't Metallica or a new band - it was Black Sabbath. It was a mainstream national radio station as well (RTÉ 2fm, in case you're wondering).
Sir, I envy your radio. Every station I get around here plays new mainstream pop and rock.

I hate everything they did other than a few cover songs past 1989. They aren't even close to the best before then either.

Strangely enough, I don't even like Metallica's thrash songs. I prefer their slow heavy stuff, like King Nothing, Sad But True, Enter Sandman and Unforgiven.

They are often heralded as one of the very few bands who sound better live than in studio. Or so I'm told.

I prefer me some Maiden. Up the Irons!
