If I have to put give a complete summery of why I like this style of CGI, I put it in two sentences:

I am far more impressed that someone can make a complete realistic human being and creatures and realistic enviornments with CGI then something cartoony with CGI.

And sometimes I think realism itself looks beautiful.

It all began really with my exposure to video game cinematics, most prominantly Final Fantasy and of course Blizzard cinematics. And even then Video Game graphics have progressed so much that we get photo realisitc graphics in games aswell that look as good as those old cinematics we saw in Blizzard games.

When Metroid Prime 1 came out, I was stunned how big a leap it was graphically from the Nintendo 64 to to the Gamecube, When Mass Effect 1 came out I was blown away at how completely photo realistic the human models looked like along with the locals and environments you visit.

I also just find realism to look beautiful in some cases. I love the look of realistic water and grassy foliage and fire in games among other things then anything cartoony.

Its also the reason I would like to see movies in this style because depending on the material, sometimes I wonder why certain stories and franchises need to have live action actors when it could all be purely animated? I still desire a Warcraft movie that is purely animated like those cinematics, instead we get horribly miscast live action actors.

I can go on explaining why I like this style, but I'll stop here and just link random examples of it and await any responses:

Samtemdo8's love poem, Ode to CGI:

Oh can't you see how much I love thee,
My Computer Generated Imagery...

J/K! Although it still takes a ton of work and hours put in to create good CGI, it is getting easier with new tools being made available to shorten the development time, so hopefully you will see more of this as it become easier to access and takes less time to develop. To me though, the examples above still does not look or feel real, although it is an improvement over cartoons. I like the " smoothness" of the CGI worlds though, they sort of have a "plastic" feel to them, which though some may be irritated with, I am sort of fond of as well.

I get enough realism every day. Personally, I'd rather not spend my time in the real world.

I don't mind realistic cgi. It works really well for things like environments, machinery and fantastical creatures. As a way of enhancing reality to include the impossible, or at least things that are very impractical with practical effects.

Rendering human beings? Less so. Even with all the advances made, a human being still seems a huge challenge to get just right in cgi. Not in still frames mind you. There the technology has come far enough people can be rendered in such detail they're for all intents indistinguishable to the real thing. It's when realistic cgi humans move that you start seeing the flaws, most of them in the facial animation.

Mind you, I'm not ragging on cgi, just that hyper-realistic cgi depictions of humans are absurdly hard to nail constistently.

There is still much room for improvement.

Eh, good effects are good effects, doesn?t really matter to me how you achieve them. I think it?s usually over use of CGI that cripples you rather than CGI in and of itself
