I was at a get-together last week and I met my friends new boyfriend. He asked if he could see my glasses. I usually don't like people touching my glasses but I was already a bit tipsy and in a pretty good mood, so I agreed. He put them on and said, "Oh, they're real!...And your eyes are really bad." I say, "Of course. Why wouldn't they be real?" He tells me that he knows someone who wears fake glasses to look intelligent. At first I thought it was a joke and I laughed a bit, but he told me he was serious. That some people actually do that.

My question to you is :

Have you ever encountered anyone who has actually done that? If so, what did you think?

Yeah, but not to look intelligent. Some people look better with glasses than they do without.

Yes. Lots of hipsters in my town do that.
They have those big black rimmed glasses that just make them look like they're trying too hard.

Now, see it's different with me because my fake glasses are narrow and cute ;P

But seriously, yes I've met plenty who do. It seems to be a trend now.
I started doing it simply because I think I look good in glasses and my vision isn't poor enough to warrant them, so I got a pair.

I haven't but it wouldn't bother me if I met someone who did. One of the many unfortunate facts of the world we live in is that people do judge you by how you look, so looking smart can be a big advantage. Given that, wearing fake glasses might be a smart move, especially in the context of a job interview or any other situation where the way people judge you can have an affect on how they treat you (i.e. most social situations).

Nope, I don't think that I ever have met someone who wears fake glasses, I've only heard about people wearing fake glasses in bad hipster jokes. If I did meet someone who did I'll probably do what you did and laugh right in their faces. I wear glasses too because my eye sight is horrific...

I've never seen anyone do it on the street, but I think it works as a kind of lingerie.
The relevant equation is: (Cute girl) + (glasses) = (smoking hot girl)

You'd have to keep up the facade, and if people somehow found out,..that would probably be a bit awkward. Though you could say it's just for the fashion. =D

I don't think I've mt anyone who wears fake glasses... I guess it would be hard to tell. It does occur to me, however, that judging someone by their looks is frowned upon, but judging the idiot wearing glasses when they have perfect vision is totally acceptable. Just putting that out there.

I've never met anyone who wore fake glasses, and I think doing so to make yourself look smarter is pretty silly since you'd have to keep up the charade. If it were just a fashion choice, though, and they didn't pretend to actually need them I think I'd be okay with that.

I know a few people who wore them in school photos either as a joke or to look better. My friend wore some to school without lenses, I can't remember why. Probably as a joke, because they didn't suit him. I wore them for a minute for the hell of it, but I'm not the type of person to wear fake glasses to look smarter/better.

Drew Carey wears fake glasses but it's more for a comedic appearance and the fact he used to wear glasses before laser eye surgery.
I didn't know that,...his comedy feels so tainted now.....lol

Hipster chicks wear them all the time. I have a friend who wishes her eyes were bad so she could legitimately have a reason to wear glasses. That's how much she likes them. Of course, for now she just has glasses that look fairly real, but they have no perscription to them. It's pretty much just a window. Not to look smarter really, but she thinks they make her look cuter so it's close enough to the same thing.

Hipsters wear thick frame glasses (Buddy Holly style) all the time, with just a clear lens.

It's fashion now I guess.

i have worn glasses that had no grading

i did it because i liked how they looked on me

but i have never needed a pair, still, its a fashion sense, like putting a pin in your vest of your favorite group, nothing more than an accessory

but i stopped when i grew up, who the hell would willingly carry around such fragile things out of fashion? i went trough at least 4 pairs in 4 months given i didn't really cared if they got scratched because they weren't needed,

people at my school wear those 3d glasses from the movie theater, not the red blue ones, the polarized thick rim ones. they just cut out the 3d part and wear them. on occasions, I have been asked if my glasses are real (they are)

While it's not shocking to me that people do this, I myself have never encountered anyone who does.

I however do wear glasses (the real kind), as my sight is horrible. And I quite dislike wearing them to boot. I always manage to smudge them; even when I'm trying to clean them with the microfibre cloth and lens cleaner! I just find them a general inconvenience anyway.

Also, they make things I enjoy like skiing a lot more bothersome. I have to wear extra thick ski-goggles so that my glasses fit underneath. Now, that itself isn't too bad, but they always fog up... Not the goggles themselves though, but the darn glasses!

/end slightly off-topic rant about *real* glasses >_>

i've never heard of this until now, but i can't say as i see the harm. we're a vain species, and accessorising has allways been sanctioned behavior.
