From the new trailer it seems like Obsidian is downgrading the graphical engine on Fallout New Vegas. Does anyone know why they are doing this? If the map is going to be huge than this is understandable but I don't see any other reasons why.

The textures seemed more flat than fallout 3's. They may just be trying to show that the city wasnt leveled like D.C.

What you have seen still isn't the final product. The Gamebryo engine is fantastic with layering textures on everything except people, so what you have seen may not have been a finished product engine yet.

Once we see screens from the post-gold phase, that's when we can make a clear deduction about the improvements, or downgrades made.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was really worried that they were going to release it like that.

Makes no difference to me as long as I can play it, as I can Fallout 3. :)

No problems. Actually if you get the chance, look at the construction kits released for PC version of Oblivion. It's incredible how quickly and easily it is to throw texture layers on that platform.

Most likely, they put the majority of layering work into new textures, and updating older ones. But recycled textures can probably be tossed on in less than a week, and really bring the game up to shine. Most games usually have about a 90-60 day period before it goes gold to debug, and perfect everything. A lot of work happens in that time, and once it goes gold is when we'll see just how good it is. Glad to help : )

Looks fine to me, but maybe I just don't need the high-end of the graphics spectrum to enjoy a game.

I agree, the game looks more cartoony now - basically what they seemed to do was futz with the animations and up the color by a ton.

I dunno how I feel about it yet. It doesn't look appealing.

Then again, i should point out that my hopes are pretty low for the game already, so there is room for me to be pleasantly surprised.

I think everything has basically been awnsered. The developer being who they are and this not being the final product. With that said I think this deserves this.

Yeah I think it is a visual downgrade but it's made by Obsidian. KOTORII didn't look as good as KOTOR.
lol.. no.

That's not even a little bit true.

As someone who just recently played through both of them, KOTOR2 has much better textures in general. People still generally look like shit, but KOTOR2 was definitely an upgraded KOTOR in terms of graphics

I thought it looked pretty much identical to Fallout 3. The landscape is less busy, so that might have thrown you off. Keep in mind that the game isn't finished yet, and will probably look nicer as a finished product.

Maybe with a slight decrease in the graphics, they can make sure some glitches/memory leaks don't occur. That would be great.

After all, graphics don't make a game, gameplay does.

I must admit I haven't played either in ages. Played KOTOR again about a year ago before the disc shat itself. I just remember being more Wowed at the time by the backgrounds in the original as opposed to KOTOR2. The character models might well be better.

Obsidian is not "downgrading" the graphical engine of Fallout. They are keeping the exact same engine as Fallout 3. No tweaks or upgrades.

This utterly disappoints me because it just can't compare to the newer games that are running on newer graphics engines. I just have to keep reminding myself that all the other improvements to gameplay are going to outweigh the outdated graphics.

I can't help but agree. Graphics wise, if it's a minor downgrade to work out kinks for gameplay and framerate, then it is of no concern to me. From the newest trailer, NV actually looks just as good as Fallout 3 in my honest opinion.
