Fan Support May Revive Resident Evil 2

Capcom isn't working on a Resident Evil 2 remake, but it is open to the idea.

Those with fond memories of Resident Evil 2 should be getting a fan campaign together, as that's the only thing which will persuade Capcom to revive this survival horror classic. In a video interview Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi wanted to make it clear: Capcom isn't working on a remake, but is prepared to consider it.

"If the fans really clamor for it," said Hirabayashi, "if there's a groundswell of support for remaking that game, then I think that's something Capcom would take under consideration." Judging by the laughter that greeted the question 'is a remake on the way' this is a question that Hirabayashi has had to answer once or twice before. He clearly didn't want to get anyone's hopes up.

Resident Evil 2, for those with hazy memories of the late 90s, is the game that really kicked off the franchise. It grossed more in its opening weekend than most Hollywood releases did. Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield go poking around in the remains of Raccoon City, and encounter pretty much what you'd expect them to encounter in a zombie-infested hellhole. It's also the first title to feature Ada Wong, one of the series' most popular antagonists.

A full-length version of the video interview can be found here. [http://www.gamespot.com/news/resident-evil-2-remake-possible-with-fan-support-6397240]

Resident Evil 2 is my favorite classic Resident Evil game. I just wonder how much of a profit a remake could possibly be. Most people aren't interested in the classic Resident Evil gameplay these days.

If they make the game like they did Resident Evil: Revelations gameplay style, I would feel more comfortable. But, if they just plan on remaking it entirely like the classic games I am a *little* worried about them making a good profit.

I also hope that, if they do remake RE2, they do it like Revelations. There is a good bit of nastalgia behind Classic RE gameplay, because making a game that controls like that now would be a massive turnoff for most reviewers and fans of the new RE control style.

I realize I may be in the minority here but: leave it alone. If you redo RE2, then do it for a mobile platform or something.

It's a really great game and one that doesn't need to be updated. I don't want remakes of old things, unless it's to make that old thing accessible!

Personally, I think that was the mistake of Resident Evil: Revelations. A survival/horror game is all about atmosphere, and playing one on a tiny screen doesn't have the same effect.

Especially when I nearly threw my 3DS away in fear.

As much as I would love to see a full resident evil 2 remake I'm not sure how they could they go about doing this without pi**** off hardcore fans. Either it will be a throw back for the 15 year annv or it will play like re4-6. Personally they should have or tried to do remake back when the two exclusive games where being made for the game-cube because that type of game-play will just not sell now unless it's being marketed to hardcore resident evil/bio-hazard fans such myself. What I really wish capcom would do is leak/release the scrapped bio-hazard 2 project with Eliza like they did with the 3 alpha builds for bio-hazard/resident evil one as seen below.

I think RE2 is fine as is, to be honest, i'd love a "remastering" for modern hardware, but those seldom turn out well. I love the pair that the remade REZero + RE2 make, I still fire them up periodically on my wii.

Lipservice, and nothing more. Conveniently timed just before RE6, and after they've all but buried the Mega Man franchise - you'd better believe this is a ploy.

Perhaps a petition is in order?

If they want to see fan support then why not do a kickstarter. That way they can make a real threshold of popularity that will let them know how many want it without any doubts.
Because it's Capcom and they don't do intellect and satisfaction of consumers at all these days.

OT: I see it ending badly, as badly as Resi 6. I still haven't washed the taste of that demo out of my mouth. If you're gonna make a third person cover shooter rather than a survival horror experience then by all means do it, but do it fucking well.

If it was remade in the original style or like Resi 4 then I'd be on board though.

This is kind of a precarious situation for Capcom, if they stick to the classic formula then they may win the support of the hardcore fans from before Resident Evil 4 who are use to that style of gameplay, but it may seem exclusionary to the fans who didn't get into the series until it went the action route. Not only that, but didn't Capcom do this same thing with the original Resident Evil... a decade ago? I loved the REMake, but this kind of seems too little too late.

On the other hand, the point of a remake should always be to fix the things that didn't work in the original, and this certainly gives away the opportunity to fix those horrible tank controls and ambiguous aiming system, but it may upset old time fans who don't want the RE series to entirely become action-orientated.

If they did it how they did the Gamecube remake of the original, it'd probably kick lots of ass.

Can't see them doing that, though.

This being Capcom, they'd either try to add an HD filter to the original Playstation game and add a bonus option to the menu that shows fan art, or they'd make it a co-op TPS that finds a way to make its predecessor look intellectually stimulating by comparison.

Either way, the old cutscenes would be used and they most certainly wouldn't get an HD touch-up.

I'm betting they're already making plans for it and are just waiting for a while. This was probably a way to get people to start talking about it. Well, if they do remake it, I'll pick it up. I always hear such good things about Resident Evil 2, and I share the same name as Leon.

Capcom and "fan support" is a hilarious joke. People have been asking for a RE2 remake since 2002's Resident Evil 1 remake was widely praised.

I mean, ask any Mega Man fan how their "support" is being rewarded these days. Even Ono has been claiming that supporting Street Fighter IV would show them there's a market for Darkstalkers... and that was the ORIGINAL vanilla Street Fighter IV. What's it gotta take?

If Capcom really cared about their "fans", a lot of beloved franchises would still be around and gamers would be far less angry at them.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a ploy. They said the same thing about megaman legends 3 and blamed the fans when they didn't green light it even though the fans were excited. This sounds like a similar situation. The fans may want it but Capcom can't be bothered so say its up to the fans and then you can place all the blame on the fans when you don't green light it.

if the fans want an update or remake, why not just pull a Black Mesa and do it themselves.

I don't see why not. I enjoyed the REmake on the gamecube and the little additions they added.
I think a RE2 remake would do pretty well, the game was only a few hours long at most so at least they don't have hours and hours of gameplay to remake.

But I am a bit of a Resi fangirl and will love anything they release...

My memory must be hazy, but I thought Ada Wong was a protagonist in RE2, not an antagonist.

Cause unlike Valve,Capcom would sue the makers of it.

Also, look at MML3 and DS4. Capcom can go and fuck themselves.

A remake? And they want fans to show their support in order to make it happen? We ARE talking about Capcom, right? Ok, so let me respond as it follow:

HA! HAR HAR DE FUCKING HAR!

So are they planning on listening to fans the same way they did with Megaman Legends 3? Cause we all know how that turned out. And not to beat a dead horse but that was the exact same situation, wasn't it? If enough fans showed support, the game would be developed. Tons of fans showed up and supported the thing only for them to say we didn't. We asked for years and years for a MML sequel and then that.

So, Capcom will be Capcom. Either we'll never see a remake or it's just gonna come out in a couple of years and it will be overpriced. Because, again, this is Capcom.

Maybe Capcom and Square are in cahoots when it comes to remakes of classics...
