With many franchises having sequels these days, there is a lot of activity with fans of said franchises. I was curious as to that if you are a fan of a franchise (which is very likely), why are you a fan? and what fuels you to continue being a fan? What moments in these games have turned you into fans?

Personally, I am a fan of the Gears of War games. I was immediately hooked by the art style - gritty and monochromatic....and red everywhere. Once I got my hands on the first one, the fluent and active gameplay kept my boredom at bay - I enjoyed it immensely.

I love good games. Because they are good. That's about it. I'm a huge fan of Shadow of the Colossus, because it was incredible.

The whole point of the thread was asking WHY are you a fan of what you are a fan of? ;P and more aimed at game-serieses if possible

I'm a MGS fan. That started with the first one and its interesting story, engaging characters and great gameplay. It never let me down since (other than Twin Snakes, and I haven't played the PSP ones).

The Half-Life franchise are the only video games that I still follow these days. They're uniformly fantastic, they run smooth as silk on my computer, and goddammit I can't get enough of that storyline.

I love most things Mario. They're always so chock full of preditible goodness: Zany character antics, simple controls, a high level of skill mastery (You can get near-godly at any Mario game), balanced, and involve a degree of randomness. Even at my most skilled games, some little 1st timer can come along and knock me down a peg through sure luck. It's not too often, but I think it's the same as rolling snake eyes in a boardgame - it doesn't happen too often, but the threat is always there. Oh, and did I mention they're fun?

I'm a huge fan of Treasure's games. They don't really create new genres, but they push the existing ones in new directions. Bangai-O is a pretty prime example of this. And Guardian Heroes's 3-plane system worked much better than Streets of Rage's plane system. Don't even get me started on Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier.

Aside from that, Rare's games are pretty enjoyable: their humor, tight gameplay and soundtracks. Speaking of soundtracks, anything Hideki Naganuma produced music for goes on my list. Sonic Rush and the Jet Set games come to mind.

You talk about Treasure but don't mention Ikaruga or Radiant Silvergun?

Consider your Treasure fan license revoked.

I have a few to list off, here...

I like Fire Emblem, specifically the ones for Gamecube and Wii, for the fact that you have to really think and strategize, and for surprisingly good character development and story for Nintendo.

I like Megaman because it's intense, fast, and (oddly enough) because it's always aggravating. Whenever I beat one, I always feel proud. I also like the series for it's music, and the Megaman Zero subseries for it's story. Plus, I have bragging rights, cause I'm the only one out of my group of friends that can actually beat a Megaman game (except for the Battlenetwork series, I have other friends that can beat that).

I like Half Life for... well... everything. Story, characters, gameplay, immersion, music, not to mention a collection of damn fun mods and spinoffs. What's not to love?

I like (prepares shield) Halo for it's music and the story. With the addition of the books, the story is pretty damn good and complex, though admitidetly there is little character development. The gameplay isn't half bad, either.

Other than that, I can say I like the classic Nintendo franchises (Zelda, Mario, Metroid) simply because they're good ol' fashioned fun.

Oh....reasons for me to ask this, if you wanted to know, is because I am studying games design and want to know what are the trigger features in games that get people hooked. I want to be able to make good games some day ^_^

Is there any real reason to hate? I never said I didn't enjoy those games. I love them. But I didn't see any reason to go into every game I'm a fan of. I love Treasure so much that I went out and bought a Gamecube and a copy of Wario World just because they made it.

And as for Ikaruga, I have it on Dreamcast. Most unfortaunately I do not own a copy of Radiant Silvergun, though.

Silhouette Mirage was pretty phenomenal too, while I'm thinking about it.

EDIT: And just for the record, Sin and Punishment was also awesome.
