I'm getting ready to start a roleplaying game taking place in the early 90s, and I've decided to make a character influenced by the early 90s grunge scene, hailing from the Seattle area. The only problem is, beyond Nirvana, I don't really know much in the way of early 90s grunge.

So, Escapists, I ask you, what, aside from the obvious Nirvana, do you think is essential listening in the Seattle grunge scene. Oh, and please, nothing later than 1995.

AGAIN, NOTHING LATER THAN 1995!!! I don't want people posting saying "This was released in 1998, but it's pretty good." The game takes place in 1995, so anything later than that is useless.

Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Candlebox, Mudhoney, Temple of the Dog, Mother Love Bone, Green River, Screaming Trees are all from the era and area you are talking about.

It all depends on the album, I only put artists who have had albums out before '95 and many of their works span past that.

Rock on, you hit all the high points as far as I can tell. I will only emphasize the importance of STP, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Hole, and Pearl Jam to that scene. Maybe Green Day? Those are the names which were all over the radio in that time period.
edit: spelling, and Green Day.

Green River and Mudhoney are the "fathers" of the genre, in terms of influence. Alice in Chains was considered more of a metal band, but they hung out in Seattle and put out the odd grunge song so they got thrown in with the others. If you want some bands that were "around" the scene, but didn't contribute "grunge" music, then check out Sonic Youth, Husker Du, R.E.M., and the entire Riot Grrl movement, particularly Bikini Kill.

That's not even going into the infinite rabbit hole that is Kurt Cobain's influences...that would take all day, a flowchart, and a what.cd account.

EDIT: Also, if you haven't already, check out the movie "Singles," which is THE 90's Grunge movie. The OTHER Grunge movie, "1991: The Year Punk Broke," is a bit hard to find, although I think they just reissued it not too long ago.

Love me some grunge 2 albums i highly advise listening to in their entirety if you want the feel of the era

Nivana - Nevermind (1991)
It's a classic but a seminal album all the same and could be argued at the time was genre defining.

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (1993)
I cannot sing enough praise for Siamese Dream fucking love this album means a lot to me and helps me through the darker times in life :)

all the above are fantastic, try out Chris Cornelle and Stone Temple Pilots. These are the only ones that have not been mentioned. Oh wait. Stone Temple Pilots have.

All the ones I know have been said but Dinosaur Jr. is the only other one I could think of.
They're not bad at all.
