Fans Turn Pokemon Fire Red Into an MMO

PokeMMO could be the multiplayer experience fans have been craving, as long as Nintendo doesn't find out about it.

Of all the dream projects that Nintendo fans wish would become a reality, perhaps near the top of the list is a Pokemon MMORPG. Nintendo has always been a little reluctant about the idea, even though the single-player game already has multiplayer components built in through its Pokemon-trading systems. Of course, this is the internet, where modders brave the lands that Pokemon developers fear to tread, so fan-made projects naturally crop up from time to time. And so, for what is guaranteed to be a very limited time, you can download a PC mod for Pokemon Fire Red called PokeMMO that allows hundreds of players to play through the game at the same time.

Let's just get this much out of the way right now: <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99678-Nintendo-Kills-Fan-Developed-Pokemon-MMOG>based on Nintendo's past history with fan remakes, there is no way the Pokemon publisher will let this project survive past its alpha state. Not only is Nintendo incredibly protective of its intellectual property, the mod only works with the already illegal PC ROM of a Game Boy Advanced Pokemon title. Considering that the project has been in development for months, it's actually somewhat surprising that Nintendo hasn't issued a cease-and-desist yet.

On the other hand, PokeMMO seems to provide the exact multiplayer experience that fans have craved for years. Watching twenty players hunting the long grass for Wild Pokemon is surprisingly natural and fitting, despite the single player proportions of the original game. Since PokeMMO is fully equipped with Red Fire's quests and content, there's already lots for players to do. All the mod does is add standard MMO features to the mix, including group parties, friends lists, in-game chats, and multiplayer battle tournaments.

While we can't say for certain how long this project has, at the very least PokeMMO could prove that Nintendo doesn't need to remake the entire Pokemon formula to design an MMO. All it needs is a tweaked classic game and accessible servers, and the fans will rush online faster than you can say "Gotta catch 'em all!"

I honestly hope this explodes so nintendo takes notice that pokemon and MMO could actually be very addictive. This is also coming from someone who hates MMO's but pokemon is too addictive to let the opportunity go by.

Been tried so often, with the same result every time: Nintendo issues CnD, developer tries to trick a way around, Nintendo refuses to accept, developer stops caring, death.

Isn't it kind of ironic that the popular gaming news site proudly displays this on their front page, saying 'I HOPE NINTENDO DOESN'T FIND OUT ABOUT THIS!'

Nintendo finds out about this stuff in one way or another, and this is like handing it to them. Seems like a lame move.

I stopped pokemon after SS/HG but I went on a leap of faith and tried B/W and loved it. It make pokemon fresh again to the point where I am keeping my eye out for BW2. If you get a chance and find it pretty cheap used I would recommend trying B/W

Nintendo-Man has shut down the mod and everything related to it as well as sued anyone who had anything to do with it.

The only issue with an MMO is that it would more or less render the games irrelevant. Frankly, for it to be worthwhile, the gameplay mechanics would have to be significantly different from the core series. Perhaps more action oriented, like the anime?

I don't see the issue from a logical standpoint. Nintendo's lawyers would have jumped down its throat already if they wanted the game to stop. And this article is misleading and sensationalized.

Unlike the other Pokemon MMO's mentioned, this isn't a full out game. Its a mod - which is perfectly legal to do. They offer you NO download to the ROM, and even ban discussion of ROMs on their website - their official statement is that if you are going to use this game, to use a ROM YOU created. Making ROM's is not illegal - you are allowed to make backup copies of any game you own. Emulation software is also not illegal.

Granted, the only thing the mod does is use the engine of the game. Some content hasn't been implemented because, well, they haven't had enough time to do so. But I don't think this game is endangered of being shut down - Pokemon Showdown and Pokemon Online (the top 2 current generation battle simulators) infringe on the IP far more than Pokemon MMO.

They are currently working with games that Nintendo and GameFreak no longer officially support, using a format Nintendo and GameFreak have refused to capitalize on despite the communities outcry for such an endeavor.

It doesn't harm or cheapen their IP - it strengthens it. Now, if they were doing this with any of the 4th or 5th Gen games, I could see a response from Nintendo being negative - those games still sell well. But the Kanto region is pretty much dead - its been featured in over 10 games, 4 of which are re-releases. Its not something GameFreak is going to dust off for a long, long time.

Haha that was pretty cool. Shame they didn't expand the maps but I hope this doesn't get stamped out too soon. Let some people have a little fun :p

This isn't anything that new... After all Pokemon World Online has been around for a good few years now - untouched (so far!) by Nintendo.

Color me uninterested. Though I will rage at Nintendo once the inevitable C&D letter arrives. Nintendo has proven to us that they are completely uninterested in making a Pokemon MMO, so it's up to the fans to make it themselves. If they want to monetize those people, then they have to get to work. Shutting down other's projects because they are too lazy to start their own is a poor move.

CEASE AND DESIST!!!

How dare you make a quality game that people have been asking for since the start of the franchise in your spare time AND NOT giving us our rightful 70% cut!!!

Stop this travesty of how IP rights were intended to be used!!!

/post intends no actual factual accuracy or any seriousness

Huh.

Reporting on it doesn't help Nintendo find out about the project how exactly?
I mean, I know you're just doing your job, but damn. It kind of screws over the people who worked on this game and any people who want to play it.

Eurogamer had already reported on it, so anybody going for Nintendo that'd call for the CnD wouldn't find it too hard to learn about it.

That's kind of like saying that when that Navy Seal who killed Osama had his name released on Fox it suddenly became okay for everyone else to do it. Not that I'm saying that this is anywhere near as serious an incident.
But the more you help spread the information to the public the more harm you do, it doesn't matter if you were the first or not.
