The best things in life are free, and freeware videogames are no exception. From classics whose developers have gone bust to modern games from very generous developers these are the safe, legal, completely free titles that can really spice up a gaming palette.

So I figured that since I just found out that Beneath A Steel Sky is currently a freeware title (a fact that I, as a Sydney-sider myself, am very happy about), why not start a thread where we can all share Freeware with each other (so long as it's safe and 100% legal)?

And if you want to check out Beneath A Steel Sky for yourself (as I'm just about to, as it finished downloading whilst I was typing) then go to Good Old Games, start an account for free (disregard this if you already have one) and boom, you get it instantly along with five other free titles.

There's Spirit Engine 2, a very good RPG. Also, there are a variety of wonderful free roguelikes - Brogue and DoomRL are good starting points for people new the the genre.

Everytime I see your avatar it makes me hungry. Whenever I see that seen from Pulp Fiction my stomach rumbles.

OT: Tribes Ascend was just released a free to play online shooter. Very fun.

This would have been mentioned several times, but since this looks like a good listing thread I'll add Katawa Shoujo [http://katawa-shoujo.com/download.php] to the list. It's a very well written visual novel.

Keep these coming, though. I love playing obscure RPG titles.

Star Control 2 [http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php] and Stone Soup [http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/] are the only ones I can think of at the moment not on steam. There are of course about half a dozen free games just for signing up for GOG as well.

0_0 That avatar...

While it's pretty well-known, I've heard good things about Dwarf Fortress.

Well, TEW2005 is freeware, but I'll admit it's not everyone's cup of tea...

Of course it is.

It has a nice pedigree by having its gameplay to be like Deus Ex, thanks to being (and i quote Yathzee): "An Action RPG game", but in this case it should be: "An Action RPG 2D Platformer"

And best of all is that the main characters is someone that you CAN ACTUALLY RELATE TO AND FEEL SORRY FOR.

This game takes the "human against all odds" and deconstruct it into pieces. There is so much at stake that IJI cannot cope with all the pressure nor the idea of killing even if it is the means of survival in a world where the human race may be extinct. I cant believe that the idea of having a human character in a game to ACT like a human characters isnt something as innovation in this day an age with all the absurd ammount of Standards McDefaults that every AAA game needs to have to actually sell something to the unwashed masses.

In short, pure gaming bliss. And it could easily top the game "Eternal Daughter" for the position of "Best Free Game on the PC"

Warzone 2100 is freeware and much improved over the original by a very active community with the source code. One of the more innovative RTS games around.

Advanced Strategic Command - Battle Isle essentially but with much more stuff and on a grander scale.

Would Team Fortress 2 count as freeware now?

I played a lot of old school Freeware like Subspace, Stellar Frontier, Runescape. All but one is gone now.

I feel old...

GRAVITY BONE!!!....

A sequel is also coming out, it is better for you not to know exactly what the game is about so I'll just leave the trailer of the second game for you to have an idea of the tone.

Battle for Wesnoth! That game is great.
I second that. Well, I like BoW, at least. It can be frustrating at times as the combat mechanics are really, really simple, but also not really balanced at times (units either hit or don't. heavy hitters may obliterate a weak unit or sit there flailing for a while). All in all, I'd recommend it, though. It's free - go and play it now, if you don't like it - fine, you at least saw an interesting game.

As for other free games:

Arcomage I found quite a while ago on an abandonware website. The tavern card game (vaguely similar to Magic: the Gathering...well, sort of) from Might and Magic 7 and 8. It's OK, although a bit frustrating, as you have to switch you computer to use 16bit colours.

Daggerfall you can download over at Bethesda's website [http://www.elderscrolls.com/daggerfall/] (also, I believe all Elder Scrolls titles before Morrowind) complete with instructions of how to run it under DOSBox.

Death Illustrated [http://www.acid-play.com/download/death-illustrated] is a free 3D shooter, and I love it. It's not really complex - mostly it's just killing stuff until you're overpowered. But I love it. It's really nice to just go and start shooting giant spiders and demons and so on.

Elona - is a free roguelike. Cruel, merciless and beautiful. If you're sick of being the invincible hero, give it a try. Or just give it a try anyway.

S.W.I.N.E. - was released for free quite a while ago. It's a fun and light-hearted RTS. It's pigs fighting rabbits. Both of them in tanks. Yeah...

MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries [http://www.mektek.net/projects/mw4/] - was also released for free a while ago.

not strictly a game but virtual box is free software which allows for any OS emulation OSX, Linux, Windows, other ones, so say warcraft 1 does not work with windows 7, install windows 98 in virtual box, install 98 and off you pop. Playing Warcraft.

Have fun kids
