I remember over nine years ago watching
thinking man this game is going to be better than Crysis. Well, fast forward a few months when it was announced to be multiplatform, and we all know things kinda went downhill from there. I still had a lot of fun with my play through of it, but I kinda rushed through it to get back to my MGS4 Big Boss run at the time. I don't think I fully appreciated how much freedom of approach and range of tactics the game could provide. Even then, I was never really bothered much by the checkpoint respawns, since the game gives plenty of breadth as far as circumventing those threats. The driving to me also felt like a natural extension of the gameplay since you have complete freedom of approach to missions, or any other point of interest. Fast travel buses helped cover more tedious distances, and malaria while annoying was easy enough to deal with, and I don't recall it being much of a nuisance as the game went on.
Anyways, seeing as it's been nine years (F.A.R. C.R.Y. 2 = 3 squared = 9, ha) I figured it's as good a time as any to revisit this flawed gem and start a new play through on Infamous difficulty. It's been an interesting challenge after a few missions, and I've so far been able to deal with the flaws. I've assaulted a base as well as sneak completely undetected into an underground bunker to tag some gold bullion, and escape the all the same. What keeps me going is thinking of the different tactics that will be possible once I acquire more weapons. For example, on the way to an enemy stronghold I'm planning something along the lines of...
A. A sniper rifle to pick off perimeter guards
B. Some explosives on a truck to drive in and create a diversion
C. Flamethrower to spread fire and confusion, allowing much needed cover to help complete my objective
D. Escaping via hang glider, or boat if not available
This guy makes a pretty good point about how the game is still the best in the series (through FC4)
I'm sure I'll run into areas where I stop to wonder why the hell I'm playing this again, just as there will be others where I'll know exactly why, because no other game can offer what it does well. In the meantime we'll see where this goes.
